St. John‘s celebrates 25th year © sSPECIAL TO THE NORTH NE St. John‘s Cathohc Schoo] opened its doors to 140 students the day after Labor Day in 1969. Surrounded by open fields and rolling farmland, St. John‘s was nestled in the northwest corner of the subdivision of Sunningdale. It became the second Catholic school in north Oakville and housed classes from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Built as an open concept structure, it held room for four classes in each of the upper and lower pods. There was a separate kindergarten classroom. A room next to the office doubled as a French room and a library. During its 25 year history, St. John‘s has seen many changes. As the open fields gave way to new development, enrollment grew beyond capacity, and in 1979, many students and staff members left to attend the new Holy Family school in northeast Oakville. In the fall of 1988, the entire school population temporarily took up resiâ€" dence in the vacant George Vanier camâ€" pus in southwest Oakville, and St. John‘s underwent extensive renovations. These included building "walls" in the open areas, the addition of six new classrooms, expansion to the gymnasiâ€" um, and the addition of a new library resource center. The development of River Oaks â€" north of Upper Middle Road â€" eventualâ€" ly produced the need for nine portables to be added to the St. John‘s site. Once again, in 1993, the St. John‘s family sepâ€" arated and several staff members and â€"students departed to Our Lady of Peace. Over the years, St. John‘s has been fortunate to have a supportive and involved group of parents who have served tirelessly in a number of ways for the betterment of the students.
