During November of 1993, I was chosen to participate in a seminar concerning drinking and driving which was based on how to raise awareness of the dangers involved. Two representatives from each high school and elementary school were invited to attend, as well as, anyone who felt they could make a contri- bution to the issue. During the meeting, we discussed how other schools had raised awareness of drunk driving and gave information on how we could inform the stuâ€" dents of St. John's. The essay search was initiated by the parents of Janet Dooley, a young Oakville girl killed by a drunk driv- er in 1991. The annual contest is sponsored by Young Drivers of Canada and The Co-operators Insurance Services. Moore, a White Oaks Secondary School student, won a $500 scholar- ship given to a graduating student in Oakville who has assumed a leader- ship role in programs related to impaired driving. The money was made available this year by Young Drivers of Canada and Kelsey’s Restaurants. In addition to the scholarship, Moore received an award of recognition from the Mayor’s Special Committee Against Impaired Driving. The winning essays have been made available for publication. Freeman and Hill were recog- nized as the winners of the ‘Why No One Should Drink and Drive’ essay contest. Freeman, 3 student at St. John’s School, won in the 15 and under category while Hill, a St. Ignatius of Loyola student, won in the 16 and over section.
