ummertime means barbeâ€" S cues, campfires and fun in the sun. Some summertime pleasures, like burgers and hot dogs on the barbecue, relaxing under the sun in a comfy lawn chair or running around at a campâ€" site or on the beach, can bring the danger of burns. Burns from barâ€" becues, campfires or the sun can be avoided with a little care and prevention. St. John Ambulance offers this advice for dealing with burns. Minor burns, including sunâ€" burn, can be immersed in cold water to relieve pain and then treated with a soothing lotion or cream. Burn ointments and creams can be found at your pharmacy. Medical help is needed for superficial burns that cover a large area, for all deep burns and electriâ€" cal and chemical burns. Infants and the elderly should receive medical help even for small burns, especially if they are to the face, hands, or genitals. Burns of this nature can cause respiratory probâ€" lems or serious infections. Time is of the essence. Act quickly â€" remove the perâ€" son from the source of the heat and immerse the injured part in cool water. If this is not possible, apply a lintâ€"free dressing soaked in cool water soaked in cool water until the pain is reduced. Your goal is to cool down the whole area as quickly as possible. This will prevent further tissue damage, reduce swelling and blistering and relieve pain. If clean water is not readily accessible, do not hesitate to immerse the burned area in the lake or river. It is important to remove anyâ€" thing constrictive such as jewelry, belts or boots immediately before swelling begins. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burn. Cover the burned area lightly with a sterile, lintâ€"free dressing, a clean pillow case or a sheet if the area is large. Protect blisters so that they do not break. Arrange for immediate medical help. Do not: * break blisters * breathe on, cough over or touch the burned area * cover a burn with cotton wool or other fluffy material In addition, do not apply lotions, ointment, oils or butter to a burn that will need medical care. Remember that the person will be pset and in a great deal of pain. Make an effort to reassure them and make them comfortable. Sips of water may be given if the perâ€" son is conscious and complains of thirst Don‘t let this summer burn you. Be careful around barbecues, campfires and out in the sun.
