Bad news. There was a solid wall of ice covering the hose the little dish that collects water for the hose. Plan B! I found water in the bottom of my refrigerator, under the crisper drawers, quite a lot, and I realized it must have come from the freezer compartment at the top. I unscrewed the panel with the knobs and dials on the back wall of the freezer to get access to the plastic hose. Removed all the frozen food, put it on the table and covered it (See ‘Check,‘ page 12) So, the hotter the weather, the more the fridge has to work, the more the frost builds up and is defrosted and drips down into the pan which is receiving more hot air because the fridge is working harder. About once a year or so you should inspect the little plastic hose that runs down from the back of the freezer compartâ€" ment to the shallow pan at the bottom of the fridge to carry off the water that has come from the defrosting process (about once a day). Without getting too techniâ€" cal, let‘s just say heat is taken from the inside of the refrigeraâ€" tor by means of coils carrying freon (sometimes gas, someâ€" times liquid, depending where it is in the system.) The heat is dissipated from the condenser coils under the fridge which you are familiar with. They are the ones you vacuum once a year to remove any dust accumulation. A fan blows air across those coils to speed the removal of heat and that heat blows across the pan of water from the defrosting process. That‘s ar~classic case of homeostasis; everything is in perfect balance ... unless of course the hose from the freezer gets obstructed and the water cannot run down during defrostâ€" ing cycles. It happened to me and I tell you only as a warning of the trouble you put yourself to if you don‘t carry out simple maintenance. Not so long ago I mentioned in one of my columns that self defrosting refrigerators are not entirely free of regular mainteâ€" nance. So why did I ignore that wise counsel? %here is an old saying: The shoemaker‘s chilâ€" dren go barefoot. There should be one for writers who give advice about home mainteâ€" nance and then fail to follow it in their own home.
