Deb McDougall and Ken Hinsperger, of Chirpworks of Atwood, offer a unique twist to counâ€" try decorating accents. They started building birdhouses together two years ago when Deb took an avid interest in Ken‘s woodworking hobby. Deb and Ken are both bird lovers and decided they â€" and the birds â€" needed more nesting areas as people fell old ORDER NOW FOR CHRISTMAS DELIVERY l(l(] trees and cut off dead branches. Using only salvaged materials â€" leftover wood from construction and home renovation sites â€" their birdâ€" houses and feeders took shape. Ever mindful of the birds‘ health, Ken also developed his own organic stains that aren‘t harmful to the birds or the environment. Another key facâ€" tor when they developed the idea for the birdhouses was to design the houses specifically for a variety of birds. Using information provided by the Canadian and American Wildlife Associations, Deb and Ken have made the houses with particular attenâ€" tion to drainage, ventilation and easy cleanâ€"out at the end of the season. "Our first birdhouse was a Chinese pagoda, because of Ken‘s desire to travel to the Far East. Then, using our own rural memories and nostalgic architecture discovered in our travels we created a general store, old school bluebird house, saw mill, old barn and our popular outhouse feeder," Deb says. In just two short years Deb and Ken are experiencing a success that they only dreamed about.
