p _ "> Maggie Jessup Natale believes dayâ€" care and busing should take a back seat to educating children. "As a society, we‘re demanding incredible things from the education sysâ€" tem," said the Ward 4 separate school trustee candidate. ‘I think we have to get back to education." The 35â€"yearâ€"old mother of three believes the board‘s priorities should be in the classroom where children should To maintain a "vibrant Catholic eduâ€" cation in Halton," incumbent Ward 4 separate school trustee Bryan Mcintyre is looking to sharing costs with the pubâ€" lic school board. At the end of his first term on the Halton Roman Catholic School Board, Mcintyre has found that coâ€"operation between the two boards is essential to keeping the lid on education expenses. It is evidenced by a pilot project the Halton Roman Catholic School Board is working on for next year. The project has 32 potential areas where the two boards can share resources â€" these range from from busing to books, from athletic coâ€"ordinators to administration purchases. "We‘re going whole hog on it," said Mcintyre. "And I think we can do more to find money rather than increase be receiving the quality education taxâ€" payers expect for their money. "If I invested 60% of my taxes in 12 or 13 years of daily swimming lessons for my child, wouldn‘t I expect that child to be close to being a champion swimmer?" she said. "Well, kids graduâ€" ating high schools should be champions at their own ability levels and that includes special needs and gifted kids. They should not be leaning on social taxes." This might mean expanding the lines of communication and cooperation even further. It could well entail more linkâ€" ages with regional and municipal orgaâ€" nizations, as well as school boards. Such a cooperative venture is now being used to resolve a problem both boards encountered when they had to safely dispose of PCBs from old light ballasts during school renovations, he said. Mcintyre points to his longâ€"time involvement with St. Bernadette‘s Catholic Parentâ€"Teacher Association and his proven track record as trustee as a good basis for his reâ€"election for a secâ€" ond term. The 40â€"yearâ€"old married father of two children said he‘s proud that he was an initiator in bringing in curriculum pamphlets as guidelines to parents of services because they weren‘t taught to read properly or even become functionâ€" ing adults." Fiscal responsibility in education means weaving a careful path between the essential and the nonâ€"essential, she added. She considered daycare and busâ€" ing as "accessory" to classroom instrucâ€" tion and should be instituted only if all educational needs are satisfied. Natale took aim at the $5.5 million the Halton Roman Catholic Separate School Board pays out each year to elementary e _ school students. § In English that was "understandâ€" able," the pamâ€" phlets outlined what students should be learnâ€" ing in their L fespective B an grades. Mc::t Te He was also Â¥ instrumental in alleviating overcrowding at St. Matthew‘s, slicing the number of portables there from eight to four with the view to eliminating them altogether in the next few years. This was accomâ€" plished by expanding three classrooms with the help of federal, provincial and Board funding. There is still much work to be done, however. Although some students need busing, she said many children could either walk or be driven by parents or careâ€" givers or use a public transit. Savings realized from lower transportation costs could then be slotted to classrooms where educating children really takes place. Parents‘ expectations of the school system should also be refined. Should they ask schools to provide dental and hygiene programs, daycare and other Separate and public boards can share resources younger students have to travel should not increase taxes or reduce bus services for older students. It does, however, mean looking at more creative ways of utilizing buses, perhaps with more stops along the routes or using double or even triple routing of buses. On a more personal level, Mcintyre denied that his wife‘s position asâ€"educaâ€" tional assistant with his Board posed a conflict of interest and affected none of the six committee posts he‘s held on the Board. "The one and only time I declared a conflict of interest was when the ratifiâ€" cation of the educational assistant conâ€" tract came to the board," he said. "And it won‘t come up again until 1996." Or should parents be responsible for them? ""In short, we need to examine all policies and ask if they are in the interests of the children," she said. "When we introduce new proâ€" grams, for example, we should be sure we can support them without eliminatâ€" ing others because of budget restraints." To reduce wasteful duplication of education resources, Natale intends to explore closer cooperation between the public and Catholic school boards. She would also like to see a zero tolâ€" erance introduced in Halton‘s Roman Catholic schools. This disciplinarian policy apparently is working well in Peel, she said, and is an effective way of reducing violence in school yards.
