'i The Oakville Longhorns assured themselves of home field advantage in the 1999 Northern Football Conference playoffs following a 52-7 shellacking of the Sault Ste. Marie Storm Saturday night in the Lock City. The victory improves the Longhorns' record to 6-0 and secures a first place finish for the Oakville club, their seventh in a row. They've won the last six NFC playoff championships. In other NFC action, the Markham Raiders sealed up second place with a 39-6 win over Sudbury. They improve their record to 4-2, with both losses at the hands of the 'Homs. Oakville head coach Bruce Gilroy was pleased with all aspects of his club's performance, particularly the offence, which generated almost 400 yards in the game. 'This was our offence's best game of the year. Each week, we are improv ing, particularly on offence. "Quarterback Domenic Camastro completed eight of nine passes for 153 yards and rushed for two touchdowns. He's finally starting to feel comfortable as the offensive leader. He's getting stronger and more confident each week." NFC rushing leader Derwin Phillips had another solid game with 19 carries for 172 yards and a touchdown. Phillips has rushed for 720 yards in six games and has scored six majors. If he hopes to have a 1,000 yard season, he'll need to gain 280 yards in the final two games. Oakville opened the scoring early in the first quarter when Dana Segin's field goal was wide and went for a sin gle. THIS WEEK'S GAMES (July 24): OAKVILLE at Markham; Sudbury at Sault Ste. Marie.. opening quarter on a single point by Sault kicker John Maione. Longhorn full back Colin Grant put the Homs in the lead for good with a 20-yard touchdown run with a minute left in the first quarter. Oakville's con vert was unsuccessful and they led 7-1 at the end of the first quarter. Longhorns blew the game wide open in the second quarter, scoring touchdowns on their first three posses sions. Slotback Stephen Moore caught an 11-yard pass from Camastro. Segin added the convert and Oakville then led 14-1. Defensive back and punt returner James Ducksworth returned a Sault punt back 49 yards for a touchdown but it was called back on a roughing the kicker call against the Longhorns. Several plays later, Camastro scored on a 2-yard scamper to increase the lead to 21-1. A few minutes later, Camastro tossed an 18-yard pass to wide receiver Colin Alie for the Longhorns fourth major of the game. With Segin's con vert, Oakville led 28-1 at the intermis sion. Camastro' opened the third quarter by scoring his second touchdown of the contest on a 4-yard bootleg play. Segin's convert increased the Oakville lead to 35-1. Late in the third quarter, Segin booted a 47-yard field goal to up the lead to 38-1. Slotback Nat Vickers scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter on a beautiful 30-yard pass from backup quarterback Richard Rebiere. Segin's convert increased the Homs' lead to 45- 1. With five minutes remaining in the game, running back Derwin Phillips scored his only touchdown of the con test on a 51-yard run. Segin added a convert to give Oakville a commanding 52-1 lead. The Storm scored on the final play of the game when receiver Mike Sutton caught a pass from quarterback Don Magli and rambled 72 yards for the major. The Storm's attempt at a two point convert was snuffed out by the Oakville defence and the Longhorns emerged with a 52-7 victory over the struggling Storm club. Oakville rushed the ball 23 times for 203 yards and passed the ball for 183 yards on nine completions on 12 pass attempts for a total offence of 386 yards. The Sault Storm generated 66 yards in rushing and 210 yards in pass ing for a total offence of 276 yards. UPCOMING The Longhorns close out the 1999 NFC regular season with two road games. This Saturday (July 24), Oakville travels to Markham for a 7:30 p.m. clash with the Raiders and finish the season in Sudbury on Saturday, July 31st, in a contest with the Sault Storm at 4 p.m. This game is the opening con test of the 1999 N.F.C. Hall of Fame Jamboree. The evening game features Markham and Sudbury. The Longhorns will host the 1999 NFC semifinal on Saturday, Aug. 7th, at. 5 p.m. at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton against either the Sault Storm or the Sudbury Spartans. The U-15AA Oakville Lightning made it to the final four of the largest soccer tournament in North America. BACK ROW: Kojo Beduh, Steve Marinic, Kayin Jeffers, Mark Misiak, Drew Macdonald, Stephen Hill, Nick Servedio and Joe Hrebik. Semifinalists at USA Cup The Oakville Lightning U-15AA Boys rep soccer team accomplished quite a feat last week by making it to the final four of the largest soccer tournament in North America. "The young men on this team can hold their heads up very high. No Oakville team (boys or girls) has ever made it this far in this tournament," commented coach Peter Bekker. "The boys represented the Town of Oakville marvelously! We played against teams from Lecco, Italy; Mexico City, Mexico; and the USA. We held our own and could have made it to the finals had we had some luck and one better call." The better call was in the semifinals against Soccers FC from Chicago, Illinois, in which the Lightning lost 1-0. The call was actually a non-call on a ball that went out of play midway (See 'Lightning' page D4)
