S tk/ 9L008CAK-LAND ( LINCOLN MERCURY Q E W A J J i JuoKiana Photo by Barrie Erskine Constable Jeff Corey and Constable Grant Schott with new police helicopter. Helicopter kept busy during inaugural patrol (Continued from page 1) it was not directly responsible for solv ing any crimes. The body of a male was found in a parked car in Acton late Monday after noon and the helicopter crew was called out to shoot video of the crime scene and the surrounding area. That's when technical difficulties developed and the aircraft had to be set down. Next, the helicopter, armed with its airborne searchlight, went on a search of north-central Oakville for a missing teenager. The teen made his way home later that day. It also conducted fruitless searches through Oakville for two suspects wanted for an assault, and Burlington, for the perpetrators of a business theft. In-between being called out for action, the helicopter and crew were involved in a search and rescue training exercise with the canine unit. "It was to get the police dog used to the noise overhead," said Cormier. At the controls of the police heli copter, which has a cruising speed of 220 km-h (138 mph) is Mike Roach, a 25-year pilot who is a veteran flier of air ambulances. Roach, an employee of Canadian Helicopters Ltd., said the police 'copter will fly in rain but not in lightning or when visibility is less than five kilometres. Joining Roach on his sorties over Halton will be police constables Jeff Corey and Grant Schott. The two offi cers will fly together for the first four shifts with Corey being the primary observer thereafter. Halton, Peel and Hamilton- Wentworth regions will get the heli copter two days a week each for 20 weeks. The government program is being financed with $250,000 of provincial money and $100,000 from each of the three regions' police bud gets. Halton's helicopter is one of four being partially funded by the provincial government. Don Robinson, chair of the Halton Police Services Board, was one of many observers at the Hamilton airport launch with a vested interest in the pro gram. He cast the deciding vote earlier this year to give the go-ahead to the pilot project in Halton but still spoke of some reservations he harbours. "Halton won't get my vote to have one (helicopter) on its own (right now). The (evaluation) report might come back and say we need one. I may be a bit cynical," said Robinson. "Here (Halton) in 10 years our pop ulation will have doubled. By that time you're bloody well right we'll need one. But the cost has to come down and the use increase substantially." 570 TRAFALGAR ROAD, OAKVILLE a t th e Q .E .W . 844-3273 Halton Regional Police helicopter takes flight J l l f TABRICLANDi CANADA S LARGEST FASHION FABRIC DISTRIBUTOR P R E V I E W i s f F A L L ' 9 9 !
