SOUTH OAKVILLECENTRE (formerly Hopedale Mall) BURLINGTON MALL New location (Close to Hudson Bay) 905.847.2975 905.635.8779 Classique-Decor.com Police make arrest following multiple 'swatting' incidents NEWS A 37-year-old Oakville man is facing multiple charges in connection with six alleged "swatting" inci dents, which occurred in January and February. Police define "swatting" as a prank call to police in which the caller claims an ongoing emergency is tak ing place. This prompts police to dispatch numerous officers and resources to an inci dent, which turns out to be false. Police allege the first calls were made Jan. 3, Jan. 13, Jan. 26 and Jan. 27. The Jan. 26 call noted a knife fight involving four people was taking place in the area of T.A. Blakelock High School. Police sent significant emergency services includ ing frontline officers, para medics, high school liaison officers and members of the Oakville Criminal Investi gations Bureau to the area. A search of the vicinity, including school grounds, found no evidence of any trouble. The Jan. 27 call claimed a fight was taking place be tween two individuals in front of the Oakville Li brary at 1274 Rebecca St. Again police and para medics responded, howev er, no disturbance was ob served. Police allege additional calls were made Feb. 15 and Feb. 17. In each case the caller requested an ambulance. The Feb. 15 call led offi cers and paramedics to nothing, however, investi gators looking into the Feb. 17 call ultimately con verged on a Wendy Lane residence where they made an arrest. Halton Police Deputy Chief Nishan Duraiappah talked about the negative impact "swatting" can have. "Cumulatively, these calls involved the response of more than 20 frontline police officers, plus dis patchers and communica tors in our 911 department who are all reserved for ser vice to a variety of legiti mate community needs," he said. "False reports carry rip pling impacts on our com munity's safety and well being. The risk to citizens, businesses and, in this case, students in a high school are significant." Waqar Gohar, 37, of Oak ville has been charged with six counts of providing false information and two counts of public mischief. Anyone with informa tion about this incident is asked to contact Halton Po lice Det. Const. Autumn Mills at 905-825-4747 ext. 2285 or Crime Stoppers at 1 800-222-TIPS (8477).
