A bronze medallist at the world championships three years earlier, she was a medal contender in Rio - if she could compete. The sailor had suffered a concussion, whiplash and a broken toe on her on­ ly leg. In the days leading up to the sailing events, it was up to physiotherapist Nancy Botting, to help get Gay ready for competition. Each day for 90 minutes in the morning and 90 min­ utes in the evening, the Burlington resident worked on the muscles in Gay's neck. Each day they would see improvement. She taped her toe to immo­ bilize it. By the first day of the sailing competition, Gay was ready and she and her husband John McRoberts went on to win a silver medal. Next month Botting will be in Pyeongchang, repris­ ing her role from Ris as chief therapist for the Ca­ nadian contingent at the Paralympics. It will be her fifth Paralympics - she also worked at the Olympic Games once - but it will be her first Winter Paralym­ pics. "It's really nice to be able to give back to the ath­ letes at that level," Botting said. "I love the Paralympic movement. We've got ath­ letes with physical disabili­ ties doing amazing things." Botting won't be the on­ ly one from her Physical Edge Physiotherapy clinic going to the Paralympics.
