The McMaster University graduate drew inspiration from the accidental damage, cre ating With Without - an exhibit currently on display at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre. It features a variety of work, including mixed media paintings and photography. "Drywall is the container of everyday life," said Bruer, adding the show "originated from a fascination with drywall as an unexplored artistic material." The scratches, markings and dents in dry- wall serve as a visual record of a home's story. "That such a modern, and now commonplace, rigid and structural material simultaneously expressed such vulnerability was endlessly interesting to me," said the artist. When working to repair the damage, Bruer removed the piece of drywall and patched the hole with a limited edition wood block print, effectively leaving a decorative scar. He then used the discarded pieces of drywall as the base elements for a mixed media painting for his show. The exhibit features a series of 10 broken pieces of drywall from various locales. They've been worked into mixed media paint ings and documentary photos of the installed prints. The wood blocks used for the prints are al so on display at Queen Elizabeth Park Com munity and Cultural Centre (2302 Bridge Rd.), where the show runs until March 8.
