The administrative ser vices committee voted Feb. 20 to receive a report on a possible town-operated Canada Day event, which would have a budget of $90,200. The matter will come before town council for ap proval on Monday, Feb. 26. The event, which fea tures fireworks and other activities, has been held in the Bronte Village since 1964. It has been steadily growing in scale since 2009, with organizers estimating the Canada Day celebra tion now draws a crowd of at least 50,000. The Bronte Business Improvement Area (BIA) has been the longtime or ganizer of the event, which has been named as one of the top festivals in Ontario and Canada. It has also risen in cost, with Bronte BIA executive director Ann Sargent stat ing the 2017 festival cost around $178,000 to hold. The administrative ser vices committee's decision to potentially take over the Canada Day festival comes following an announce ment by the Bronte BIA on Dec. 18 that they would no longer be able hold the event itself. Sargent had asked for a town contribution of $88,000 for the 2018 celebration. The town's director of recreation and culture, Ni na de Vaal, said other logis tical supports the BIA was asking for would have put the total funding request well above $100,000.
