"From students on my youth council, to entrepre­ neurs and CEOs of large companies in my riding, everyone is in agreement that our right to an open internet is something that we need to protect. Howev­ er, it's more than just free- dom of expression. Our growing digital economy relies on having a fair play­ ing field for everyone. The internet has thrived due to net neutrality principles of openness, transparency, freedom, and innovation. This needs to continue." Oliver's discussion with Sheridan students touched on a number of areas in- cluding the subject of in­ ternet piracy and how some telecommunications companies have argued an end to net neutrality would allow them to block access to piracy sites. "I think there is a time and a place for content takedown, but I don't feel that is the responsibility of the service providers," said one student. "That should be the re­ sponsibility of people whose copyrights are be­ ing infringed upon and their legal teams and pos­ sibly their industry to go after and enforce." Oliver also weighed in on this topic. "It is govern­ ment leg­ islation and regu­ lation that is re­ quired," he said. "The ISPs should not be the ones that are po­ licing and deciding what sites are blocked and what sites are not based on their understanding of piracy." Oliver's motion will likely be debated toward the end of March. "I strongly believe that it is important that all Canadians have access to choice and the free exchange of ideas.
