NEWS 19 Town installing new pedestrian crossovers Metroland file photo The Town of Oakville will be installing 15 pedestrian crossovers in 2018. The Town of Oakville has announced it will be in stalling 15 new pedestrian crossovers this year. The crossovers, which are marked by ladder-style strips on the road, signage that says "Stop for Pedestri ans" and sometimes over head signage and lights, is a new type of crossing that require motorists and cy clists to wait for pedestri ans to cross the full width of the road before proceeding. Four crossovers will be installed this month, weather permitting at: .Pine Glen Road at Mill stone Park .North Ridge Trail at Crosstown Trail .Nautical Boulevard at Nautical Park .Central Park Drive at Gatwick Drive The town's pedestrian safety program, approved by council in October 2017, recommends more than 170 pedestrian crossover loca tions to be implemented throughout the town over the next 10-15 years. "Council is committed to improving pedestrian op tions and safety for Oak ville's residents and visi tors," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "Oakville is becoming even more walkable and livable with the ongoing ad dition of new pedestrian crossovers." Unlike crosswalks, which are located at traffic lights, stop signs, school crossings or other intersec tion, pedestrian crossovers can be found at any stretch of roadway, usually mid block. Locations and the prior ity of installation are deter mined using a list of criteri- a such as safety; public de mand; and connectivity to schools, seniors' facilities, transit stops, and parks and trails. gSi Pam Damoff, MP Oakville North-Burlington Join my 2nd annual Young Women in Leadership Program!
