The Grade 9 student posted two dominant runs to win with a combined time almost five seconds better than the rest of the field. HERB GARBUTT hgarbutt@burlingtonpost.com Hannah Kilmer-Choi had let her coach know that she had some previous rac ing experience. That wasn't unusual. Anyone competing in the open divi sion would have raced at their club before. But Cassandra Ward quickly learned that the Grade 9 student might have downplayed her abilities a little. "The first run at GHAC, she came down the course and it was "What the . ?'" the Garth Webb Chargers snowboard coach said. "People thought she didn't go around all the gates be cause her time was so fast." Kilmer-Choi has been snowboarding since she was five. "Since I started so early, it gave me a head start on a lot of the other snowboard- ers," she said. "But my friends are all catching up now and getting faster." They're not catching up fast enough, though. At the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associa tions (OFSAA) Snow boarding Festival, Kilmer- Choi took the gold medal with a two-run combined time of 71.19 seconds, just a shade under five seconds better than the rest of the field. A day earlier she won gold in snowboard cross at the Ontario Winter Games. It's only been two years since she first raced the discipline but she's been hooked by the excitement and unpredictability of racing in tight quarters with her opponents. To complete her whirl wind week, the 14-year-old finished third at the pro vincial alpine champion ships. And this is after she took a step back from the sport. Kilmer-Choi was a member of the Ontario de velopment team but took a break this season. She's been busy enough with rac es every weekend since the start of January, though she said she would like to get back to training with a team next season. Her brother Riley has competed at two world ju nior snowboarding cham pionships, but Hannah has options. She's also an ac complished rider on horse back. In 2015, she won her class (small pony under saddle) at the Royal Winter Fair and continues to com pete on the A circuit and Trillium circuit. Snowboarding does have its appeal, though. "It's the adrenalin rush," she says. "That rush you get as you're getting ready to pull out of the gate and then executing your plan for the next gate. A11 the stress just floats away." In addition to her medal, Kilmer-Choi also received a gold cow bell for her OF SAA win. She eventually stuffed a sock in it to stop it from clanging with every step she took. But if she de cides to make some noise in snowboarding, she's well- equipped to do so. Joining Kilmer-Choi on the podium was Oakville Trafalgar's Dillen Oliver. The Grade 10 student was fourth by more than two seconds after the first run, but she made up the time with a final run that was second only to Kilmer-Choi to claim the bronze. OT teammate Anika Hambleton was fifth and Loyola's Megan Turnbull was seventh. The Oliver family earned a second medal when Cam Oliver of Oak ville Trafalgar won the sil ver medal in the open boys' division, finish. The Grade 12 student was fourth after the opening run but jumped two spots with a strong second run. Loyola's Alex Volante was sixth, Garth Webb's Beck Newby was ninth, White Oaks' No ah Glidden was 10th and Abbey Park's Matt Wilkes was 16th. In the high school boys' division, Login Quinn of Blakelock turned in a fifth- place finish, Steven Proko penko of Loyola was sixth, Oscar Crutchlow of Abbey Park was 15th. Elsie Goncalves of Aqui nas was 15th in the girls' high school division, Ju- lianne Li of White Oaks was 20th.
