With Vanderwoude drawing upon her 20 years of experience in the travâ€" el business to dispense expert advice to customer after customer, she is clearly is a master at work. In combiâ€" nation with the talents of the two other sales representatives in the office, customers have a combined 60 years of experience in the industry working for them. Says Vanderwoude, the experiâ€" ence factor takes the guesswork out of much of their job of recommendâ€" ing vacations, and often leads to savâ€" ings for the clients because the staff know where and when to look to track down discounts. Vanderwoude said, who has all the resources and the Sabre network on computer to track down information she doesn‘t have memorized. "You learn from experience what people want. Some people come in here and think they want a certain type of vacation but you know enough to ask the right questions about what they are expecting to do on the vacation and if the resort they have in mind will really be right for them." For example, she says, newlyweds heading out for a week‘s vacation might enjoy spending time at the beach and may not need too many distractions. Veteran travellers, out for their 15th trip south, will not be content with a sedentary vacation and thus would be encouraged to rent a car and take side trips. Prominent Travel is a threeâ€"yearâ€" old business located in the Upper Oakville Town Centre at Eighth Line and Upper Middle Road. It‘s a busy fullâ€"service agency that has develâ€" oped a solid steam of regular cusâ€" Hood cruises into Oakville tomers in its relatively short exisâ€" tence. (Continued from page 14) interdependence. As he explained it in a recent interview, the title of the program, Calling the Shots in your Life, reflects his management style at Bruce Hood Travel. "It‘s about the idea of people havâ€" ing to work together, to use teamâ€" work to do their jobs," said Hood. "People have to be supportive of each other, give each other a pat on the back both in the business world and in the family. "We offer excellent service, we have lots of experience, everyone is very knowledgeable and we are very friendly," Vanderwoude said, listing reasons for the success of the operaâ€" tion. "People enjoy being here because we are so friendly." For more information, call 849â€" 8747. "My experience has shown that you have to plant a seed of support so that people can stop and think. I use the whistle as a symbol. The idea is, one, that people won‘t be so critical of themselves, and two, to give a pat on the back." 4 Hood‘s two travel agencies â€" the first Bruce Hood Travel opened in Milton eight in 1985 â€" emphasize service to the customer above all else, and he as president sees his job as implementing his plan as a way to encouraging his employees to offer the best possible service to the clients of Bruce Hood Travel. "I believe in handling people the way I would like to be handled," the 57â€"yearâ€"old explained. "It‘s like in hockey â€" if I don‘t do my job I let the team down and myself down." Hood originally got into the travel business as a result of his frequent travel as hockey referee. "I learned how important it was to give good service," he recalled. He had dealt with Milton Travel for 21 years, and upon his retirement from refereeing in 1984, he made a decision: "I liked the business so much I bought it." Over the years he expanded the staff from three to eight and three years ago Bruce Hood Travel was recognized as the Milton Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year. In the travel business, Hood knows, the agency is only as strong as its employees. They‘re the ones the customers deal with in planning a trip, making arrangements and drawâ€" ing up contingency plans. To ensure repeat business, Hood has to make sure he has the right staff on hand to give that attention and provide the level of service Hood and the cusâ€" tomer expects. There‘s nothing on the shelves here," said Hood, sweeping his arm across his office. "We‘re selling ourâ€" selves. It requires that the employees become their own managers. They‘re calling their own shots. Hood feels he has hired good peoâ€" ple to staff his new office in Bronte. Sales zep Beth Southern was with the agency that previously occupied the site at 2359 Lakeshore Road West, Jaymark Travel; Hood describes her as a "veteran agent, very personable". Cindy Belbeck is another veteran of the business who is a hard worker and "doesn‘t rest on her laurels‘. And Freda Harrington is a goâ€"getter who will be doing some corporate sales. "I‘m surrounding myself with good people," says Hood.
