He said he had not stated more money would be expected through a name change, nor did he say patients would have to be called customers to fit He had stated in prior meetings that the name change was part of the overall move in health care towards promoting wellness and health. Although he told board members last month part of the reason to change the hospital‘s name was the possibility of more provincial funding. On Tuesday, he said, it would be unrealistic to expect a name change would suddenly result in the province showcnng the hospital with money. Staff, the medical advisory commitâ€" tee, and the members of the auxiliary board, all had expressed reservations with the change. Some had altered their position. The auxiliary had opposed it, then supported it, then opposed it after calling an emergency meeting. Tuesday, auxiliary president, Pat Ross, told the board that some longâ€"standing auxiliary members had threatened to leave should the hospital change its name. In a recent report on hospital staff morale, study author, Howard Bernstein, pointed to the costs and time associated with the proâ€" ject "angers the staff profoundly" â€" they believe money and time should be put into staff and patient care. "This has been a sensitive issue, to put it mildly," acknowledged president Dieter Kuntz. Throughout the entire issue, it was not unusual to have certain groups â€" who supported the name change â€" alter their opinions at another meeting. The name change became a bone of contention both inside the hospital and out in the community. Many people involved in the fundraising questioned the need to spend money on a name change when they are asking for money. Estimated cost of the name change was $3,000. He said it was difficult enough to ask for money in the fundraising campaign without trying to justify costs associated for a name change. "I‘ve sensed that management has pushed this, and I don‘t see why this has been pressed for so hard by management," he added. "I am adamantly and diametrically opposed to the name change," said Weir, pointing out that for a facility that claims to represent the community, it was way "out of sync" with the community on this issue. He commented that some board members were reluctant to make public comments about the issue. One board member, Ward 5 town councillor, Sean Weir, questioned the reasons behind the drive for the name change in the first place. Although some board members charged not altering the name made the institution too traditional and conservaâ€" tive, the majority of the board members believed too much time had been spent on the issue. The issue has been a controversial and divisive one for board members who were not unanimous when the vote was taken to keep the current name of the hospital. Board member, Reg Monaghan, moved a lengthy resolution that called for the retention of Oakvilleâ€"Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and rejected the proâ€" posed OMTH Health Care Centre or OTMH CARE centre. He added that a separate entity could be established at some point in the future for health proâ€" motion. ollowing hours of discussion and F endless debates, the Oakvilleâ€" Trafalgar Memorial Hospital‘s Board of Governors, Tuesday night, setâ€" tled on a name â€" the same one its had for the past 44 years.
