Prior to the budget, Brown went to finance minister, Paul Martin, about taxaâ€" tion and how it affects women in the country. "Well, I didn‘t win that battle, but I plan to next year," she said. Brown said it was important, with an opposition bent on their own agendas â€" that Canadians provide input and continue to prick the conscience of the governâ€" ment. She said the opposition members are so intent on making points against each other â€" the Bloc as the left; the Reform as the right â€" that the governing party is left untouched. "It is as if they are hitting each other with blunt mallets and we are left unscathed," she said. "You never hear a federalist orientation; there is little talk of the country and its coastâ€"toâ€"coast, bilingual, multiâ€"cultural nature," she said, noting the separaâ€" tion issue at the heart of the Bloc platform and the "money and morals" basis of the Reform party. "The heated debates are not so much in the House of Commons as within the government caucus," maintained Brown. As a newcomer with just six weeks of experience in the House under her belt, Brown called it an "interesting" Parliament; one in which the federalist perâ€" spective and talk about national issues is rarely mentioned. She has recently been appointed to the heritage committee which oversees the CBC, the CRTC, among others. e Brown says Opposition ineffective to 10 p.m. to greet the small gathering and speak briefly about her few weeks in office in Ottawa.
