It pays to understand how ‘discounters‘ work he so called "discounters" are here I again. The last time they disrupted our retail was in the early ‘60s, and their demise or conversion was inevitable. This time, however, they are here with a vengeance. Six, all at the same time and all but one from south of the border. To nobody‘s surprise, the one and only Canadian entry sold itself "suddenly??" to an American bidder. Two of the American entries merged, so that now we have five American businesses, all poised to take money out of Canada and change our way of life. What is modern "discounting"? It is selling larger quantities of merchandise with less service in a very spartan exvironment. Some items, about 3â€"10% of the whole assortment, are sold at a reduced price. This reduction â€" discount can sometimes be quite considerable. To limit some of this pirating, the former Trudeau government introduced "FIRA", the Foreign Investment Review Linda Peelâ€"Devitt, owner of Principle Designs, shows off an example of the shop‘s custom crafted clothing. The store is also an authorized dealer of the MacPhee clothing .line and holds sewing workshops. The only people to benefit by this new invasion will be American manufacturers and American importers of offshore products. On the losers‘ side will be large numbers of Canadian retailers, their Canadian landlords, and, naturally, Canadian manufacturers. These new retailers carry predominantly the same merchandise as they carry in the United States. What is a markâ€"up? And what does it cover? What are rents? Wages? What are blind items? What are smoke mirrors? What are U.S. packingâ€"prepricing practices?
