The sooner the crime scene can be preserved the better the chances are of finding evidence. So the work requires a common sense approach. A piece of paper, a hair, a pin, a candy wrapper â€" all have their stories to tell an experienced ident officer. But you also have to know where to step. An errant footprint could destroy evidence. The award is essentially recognition by peers of a job well done and why not â€" ident work is routine, painstaking and it can be messy. That means you might have to wade through mud, snow or sleet to collect samples at a crime scene. Shaw‘s achievement has just added to a winning tradiâ€" tion. The Halton ident squad has copped the Tlller Award six consecutive years, from 1988 to 1993. "But our purpose is not to convict. We present the eviâ€" dence and the judge has to decide," says Shaw, 44, a 24â€" year veteran of the Halton force. To get that shot, Shaw had to employ some fancy photo work. And by the way, that number led to a conviction. Shaw‘s winning picture is framed and mounted on the wall at the ident office on Bronte Rd. The photo is of the vehicle identification number stamped on a piece of metal found on a stolen car. For Yuor Personalized "SHOP LOCALLY CARDS® "It‘s nice to get the award. We would never win a comâ€" mercial photo contest, but that‘s not our intent," says Shaw. "It‘s mainly for interest‘s sake and friendly competition." Shaw is the winner of the 1993 Tiller Award, which recâ€" ognizes excellence in evidence photography. The annual contest is open to police identification bureaus Canadaâ€" wide. prize. Not only does this ease the bureau‘s problem with covâ€" ering all crimes in region, it gives police officers better knowledge of ident bureau methods. The SOC officer determines the evidence to be gathered and if need be, can call in the ident bureau. Called the Scenes of Crime program, this procedure preâ€" pares patrol officers to assess simple crime scenes like break and enters and auto thefts. So it is training selected pfitrol officers in basic evidence preservation. Because of its small size, the sixâ€"officer ident bureau is unable to visit every crime sight in the region. "You need somebody who is methodical," says Shaw. ""A lot of people don‘t like to do it. We know the work isn‘t for everybody. You won‘t get car chases and shootouts in this job, but I think we do a good job in court," says Shaw. And evidence gathering is crucial to getting a convicâ€" tion, because, as a rule statements and confessmns are hard to get. As with anything that requires patience, the work can also be boring. But there are those who find it fascinating. Anybody who has read Sherlock Holmes and thrilled to hlS amazing deductions has really seen a fictionalized ident officer at work. Once, police found a torn match cover at a crime scene This eventually led to a rape conviction, says Shaw. "And you never know what is important, so nothing can be overlooked," says Shaw.
