Separate Board approves Burlington Byzantine school The Halton Roman Catholic School Board recently approved the establishment of classes in Halton which will foster and promote the development of the Eastern Rite faith in a Catholic school environment. Such classes will meet the educaâ€" tional and spiritual needs of the growâ€" ing Byzantine community in Halton. Initially, the Eastern Rite classes will be offered from the Junior Kindergarten to Grade 4 level for September, 1994. It is anticipated that combined classes will be offered in Junior/Senior Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2, and Grades 3 and 4, based on projected enrolments. A new grade level will be added each year. Three classrooms will be required for September, 1994 and will probaâ€" bly be temporarily located in a Burlington school, yet to be deterâ€" mined, since accommodation is not Mon.â€"Fri. 9:30 a.m.â€"9:00 p.m. Sat. 9:30â€"6:00 p.m., Sun. 12 Noonâ€"5 p.m. BDudsons Bay Company One gift per customer. Currently, the Holy Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church in east Burlington â€" under the leadership of Father Roman Curkowskyj â€" serves both the Burlington and Oakville Byzantine communities. Father Roman has indicated that the parish growth is centred in Oakville. It would be logical, therefore, for the Board to eventually locate the school permanently in Oakville, but strategiâ€" cally located that would make Burlington access practical. The classes planned for September, 1994, will be staffed with teachers of the Eastern Rite faith and will come under the authority and supervision of the site principal where the classes are located. Father Curkowskyj will provide spiritual direction and guidance. The students enrolled in the Eastern Rite classes will share in the site school‘s plant facilities â€" library, gymnasium, staff room, etc. and they will fully particiâ€" pate in the school‘s intra/extracurricuâ€" lar clubs or team activities. Instruction will be in the English language and the regular program of studies includâ€" ing Religion of the Eastern Rite, will be offered. Cultural instruction will be a decision of the Byzantine parent community and will occur after reguâ€" lar instructional hours. In the universal Catholic Church, there are two theological approaches that have evolved over the centuries â€" the Roman Catholic Rite and the Eastern Catholic Rite. The Eastern Rite is composed of six major groups: Byzantine Catholics (Greeks, Slovaks, Ukrainians, Romanians, Byelorussians, some Serbians, Croatians, Albanian and Bulgarian), Syrian Catholics, Copts, and Ethiopian Catholics, Maronite Catholics, Melkite Catholics and Chaldean Catholics. Byzantine Eastern Rite Catholics accept the spiritual leadership of Rome and are included in the broad definition of ‘Roman Catholic" in the Education Act. Most large separate school sysâ€" tems in southern Ontario have Eastern Rite schools within their jurisdiction. Thieves hit the big time early Monday morning when they broke into Sharkey‘s Restaurant. Thieves take safe According to Halton Regional Police, the Forsythe Street estabâ€" lishment was entered around 5 a.m. through an unsecured door. Once inside, the burglars stole small safe containing a laree amount of cash. Police are continuing an investiâ€" cation.
