Edie Sutton and Eddy Berscheid are the owners of the Jagerhaus, a restaurant specializing in German food located at the corner of Lakeshore Road and Kerr Street in Oakville. Under two former owners, the place was known as the Oakville Schnitzel House and Cafe Hamburg and earned a reputation for being authentically German. Edie and Eddy used to visit the place in its former incarnation and while they enjoyed their meals, they took notes on how they would improve it if they ever had the Jagerhaus earns praise for its authentic German fare $7[ 25 Eackh wem Includes: + One Rotisserie Barbecued 1/4 Chicken * Choice of one: fries or rice or baked potato or Chalet salad * Choice of soft drink or coffee or tea *« Choice of pie (slice). Two years ago, they got that chance and bought the business, changing its name to the Jagerhaus (hunter‘s house) in reference to Eddy‘s fondness of hunting. "We‘ve done quite a few things to improve the food," Edie noted recently. "We now prepare everyâ€" thing on our own, everything is preâ€" pared on the premises. Our spacetzle (noodles) are made from dough richt here." Both Eddy and Edie are Germanâ€" born and appreciate authenticity in German food, and Edie jokes they receive lots of tips from customers. "Everybody likes to give suggesâ€" tions to a restaurant," she said. "German food is regional, and the same dish can come from different areas with different spices." The Jagerhaus chef is Gerd Berscheid, the Germanâ€"born nephew of Eddy who comes to Canada with a long list of credentials from the German hotel business and the skills to deliver the traditional tastes. Edie identifies four main strengths of the restaurant: good atmosphere, comfortable surroundâ€" ings, great food and the personal touch. More focus has been put on the Jagerhaus bar, with a versatile keyboardist named John Paul a weekly fixture who attracts a strong following. Customers now come for a good singâ€"song time as well as the food, she notes. "The clientele has changed a lot since we came here," says Edie. "Eddy and I work the bar, we know the people and what they drink." The customers are also appreciaâ€" tive of the reasonable prices and large servings, she says. A unique meal such as Pork Hocks comes with a mixâ€"andâ€"match of fresh vegâ€" etables, spaetzle, dumplings, mashed potatoes or red cabbage and receives lots of praise â€" "if they can finish it," Edie laughs. Other German favorites include Jaeger Schnitzel, Holstein Schnitzel and Sauerbraten.
