Brian‘s situation differs somewhat from other Little Brothers in that he had a Big Brother, lost him when the Big Brother was reâ€"located out west, was placed on a waiting list and finally matched with a new Big Brother whom he likes just as much. "He was just devastated," said his mother Ruth. "He didn‘t think he‘d get a Big Brother he liked as much." The fourâ€"month wait was "hard for him" after building a friendship with his first Big Brother over a yearâ€"andâ€"aâ€"half "but the Big Brother handled it very well" and they still keep in touch, said Ruth. "Brian never had a male in the household," and he had trouble understanding how males relate to one another, she said. | "It helped with with his male identity," said his ) mother and his report card reflected his newfound ; OR Ruth Allen and her eightâ€"yearâ€"old son Brian, the Big Brothers has had a tremenâ€" self esteem. Ruth said she was hesitant at first to enter into the program. "I‘d always been on my own with Brian and I was afraid of having to share him. It allowed me to let him have other relationships (and not worry about losing him). I was worried he would resent his lifestyle." , Ruth said she finally contacted Big Brothers because "I knew how badly" he needed male conâ€" tact; she saw how he interacted with one of her cousins. / Having a male role model wasn‘t a big issue before Brian started school she said, but it quickly became one when he heard other kids talk about their fathers and saw the family drawings. Even if the other kids didn‘t live with their fathers, they were still a part of their lives on weekends. "He didn‘t see his father at all," said Ruth. ‘"He‘s very proud of the fact he has a Big Brother." Having a male care for him and nurture him proves to Brian that there‘s nothing wrong with him, an impression she felt he had because of the absence of his father. , Long waiting list for Big Brothers a reflection of society, increased need _ By KATHY YANCHUS Oakville Beaver Staff In Oakville alone, there are 30 boys, according to the organization‘s executive director, Evelyn Gransaull. "We usually have 15 to 20," she adds, explainâ€" ing that the increased intake of Little Brothersâ€"inâ€" waiting is a reflection of society. _ Gransaull believes the reasons for the decline in Big Brothers is multiâ€"fold and has to do with a fear of commitment, a concern that all Little Brothers have behavioral problems and the absence of time (See ‘Big Brothers . . .‘ page 12) All Big Brothers are athletic, and all Little Brothers are abused and neglected. Those are, of course, myths, and just a few of _ the many the Big Brothers organization is constantâ€" ly trying to destroy. It‘s particularly important now though, because , the Big Brothers of Halton have never had so many _ boys on their waiting list. Brian Allen, 8, is one of the lucky ones. Devastated by the loss of his Big Brother when he was transâ€" ferred out west, Brian spent four months on the Big Brothers of Halton‘s waiting list before being matched with Rich Amos, a new Big Brother he likes just as much as his first one. He‘s lucky because the agency has 30 boys on its waiting list in Oakville alone.
