New book discusses pestâ€"resistant grasses (Continued from last page) spend so much time and money feeding, watering, mowing, deâ€"weeding, and ridâ€" ding it of insects. Fortunately, help is on the way. "The Natural Lawn" is the title of a recently published book by the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. This is one of the Plants and Gardens, Brooklyn Botanic Garden Record series. It is a lawn primer that sugâ€" gests ways to reduce watering, mowing, fertilizing, and weedâ€" ing using the new grass variâ€" eties â€" many of which are pest and disease resistant. The 86â€" page booklet, as others in the series, is authored by several writers with a guest editor, Margaret Roach, in this case. Warren Schultz wrote the chapter titled "Eight Steps to a Pesticideâ€"Free Lawn". These are: acrate the turf, top dress, overseed, fertilize with organic (natural) turf food, mow high and often leaving the clippings on the lawn, monitor the lawn for insects and disease, use biological controls, and conâ€" sider grass substitutes. The Lazy Gardener‘s Guide to Fertilizing the Lawn recomâ€" mends two lbs. of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet for our blueâ€" grass, fescue, and perennial rye grass mixtures. This would require 20 lbs. of 10â€"6â€"4 fertilâ€" izer per 1,000 square feet applied in October or after the grass stops growing. At the Landscape Trades Show in Hamilton, I noticed Oseco are introducing a Water Saver Brand lawn seed this year. It consists of a blend of turfâ€"type Tall Fescues to give durable low maintenance lawns under dryer conditions. In the fall of 1992, I overseedâ€" ed three weed infested areas of the front lawn along the street with Tall Fescue, Chewings fescue, and new turf type Ryegrass. It made a great lawn last year, but I could not see the difference between the three areas. Another suggesâ€" tion in the "The Natural Lawn" is to use the new hybrids of Buffalo grass in our area. This is used on the prairies. The new varieties grow only four inches tall, so need mowing once or twice a year. The book also looks at Lawn Renovation, Sedge Lawns, Ground Covers for shade, and a Prairie Wild flower lawn for the back and wooded areas. "The Natural Lawn" in soft cover is available from the Royal Botanical Gardens H.Q. in Burlington and some book stores.
