In r quest to escape the realities of winâ€" , finding out about vaccination quirements and health precautions for ir destination may be the last thing we |member. Forgetting may have serious nsequences. The World Health Organization HO) works closely with the health thorities in all countries to identify hd control illnesses. With the tremenâ€" bus increase in the number of people velling between countries, the speed travel, and the difficulties of surveilâ€" ce, major challenges in controlling e international spread of diseases have sulted. However, the international vel and health regulations set by HO, help prevent the international pread of diseases with the minimum of convenience to travellers. One of the ain ways to control this spread is ough vaccinations. Some countries require the Yellow ever vaccination by law for entry to feir territory. WHO recommends other accinations for general protection Health Happenings The Halton Regional Health Department holds community immuâ€" nization clinics in Oakville the third Tuesday of each month from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Vaccines available include: mumps, measles, German measles, diphtheria, polio, whooping cough, tetanus, and haemophilus B. Mantoux testing is also available. There is no fee for this service. Call $25â€"6060 for an appointment. Â¥ Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association 1994 Registrations against certain diseases and still other vaccinations may be advisable in certain circumstances. However, vaccination is by no means the only way to control the spread of diseases. Preventive medicaâ€" tion, such as antimalarial medication, and avoidance of risky situations, are the other main methods of staying healthy when travelling. Which travellers should be conâ€" cerned? As a rule of thumb, vaccination requirements and health advice depend on whether you are travelling to a low or high risk destination. Low risk destinaâ€" tions are most places in North America, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. In addition, if you are travelâ€" ling to other destinations and will be staying in a resort or urban area for less than one month, you are considered to be a low risk traveller. However, if you haven‘t had a tetanus, diphtheria, and polio shot in the last 10 years, you‘ll need a booster. You‘ll also need to check with your doctor to ensure you have immunity against mumps, measles, and rubella. Travel to areas outside those menâ€" tioned above makes you a higher risk traveller who may need more specific advice. For example, if your itinerary includes staying in India or backpacking around Africa, you‘ll need to start taking antimalarial medications prior to reachâ€" ing your destination and continue to take them until four weeks after leaving that destination. And of course, if you‘re travelling to Mexico, Malaysia, or India, to name a few area, don‘t drink the water unless you‘re sure it is safe. A traveller‘s destination and itinerary are not the only things considered when travel and health advice is offered.
