Both proâ€" grams were introâ€" duced in February, 1992, and are scheduled to end on Mar. 1. "These are diffiâ€" cult times for so many Canadians," Donald E. "The promises and speeches of the election campaign now : must be matched with conâ€" crete actions and policies to stimuâ€" late a fragile econâ€" omy." "Despite the fact your party promised to conâ€" tinue these proâ€" grams during the election campaign last fall, as yet there hasn‘t been an official announcement that this will be done." In his letter, Lawby notes that over 224,700 indiâ€" viduals, couples, or families have used a percentage of their RRSP funds to buy a principal residence under ‘"The Home Buyers‘ Plan". Another 141,000 have taken advanâ€" tage of the lower 5% downâ€"payment require m en t allowed _ under "The First Home Program". "These initiaâ€" tives have had subâ€" stantial spinâ€"off benefits on the Canadian econoâ€" my," Lawby adds. ‘"They have creâ€" ated jobs in many sectors of the econâ€" omy, inâ€" creased demand for goods and services, and generated considâ€" erable tax revenues for all levels of government." In the letter, Lawby urges the Federal governâ€" ment to extend the closing deadlines on both programs for at least one more year. "We further believe your govâ€" ernment should actively consider making these proâ€" grams a permanent part of Canada‘s housing policy and balanced approach to economic growth," Lawby writes.
