It is this nwd to exercise so muc control over themselves that bothers some of the young people who are coming to Jennifer Reimanis. “They say, I feel like a pin cushion, because besides the injections there are lots Q blood tests to take,†she notes. “0 they say, I’m feeling ï¬ne one minute and then ï¬ve minutes later I feel like I’m dying. I say, youwe got to learn to take care of yourself, and ifthey are, then I say, go to your doctor.†The dynamic Reimanis is quick to note the contributions of her fellow board members, of the hundreds o volunteers who help carry out the DA0 programs and or DAO branch coordinator Becky Wheeler to the cause. “The board has become a lot younger, both mentally and physical- ly, since I took over. There’ s a lot of teamwork, we work well together -â€" I couldn’t ask for anything more.†She is not as easy, though, on those who won’t lift a ï¬nger to help out. “They have a responsibility to get involv â€Reimanis says, becoming animated. “We’re straining our brains perforating the functions of the asso- ciation, raising money, and it’s the same people all the time. Three of the eight board members have diabetes, including Reimanis herself. She learned she had diabetes at the age of three and now gives her- self four shots'a day. A banker by profession, she admits to having a weakness for chocolate, though she allows herself only one‘bite of a chocolate bar. DAO programs include inforrna- tion nights three or four nights a year, a weekly glucometer instruction night, production of a newsletter, advocacy programs and a variety of fundraising events. The annual canvass of Oakville homes took in $42,000 last fall, and a Sweepstakes promotion with a cruise and a car among the prizes is also important. And every three weeks, the DA0 holds a bingo night that has accumu- lated the impressive total of $300,000 over nine years â€" and every penny ,of that money, Reimanis notes, goes to research through the Charles H. Best Fund The ofï¬ce of the DA0 rs located- within Halton Pharmacy at 10603 Speers Road, with space donated by.’ the pharmacy. There are dozens of, pamphlets on hand for th curious.
