St. Luke‘s is the first of three schools to be blessed and officialâ€" ly opened in 1994 during the Board‘s 25th anniversary year. Similar ceremonies will be hosted at Ecole Sacréâ€"Coeur in Georgetown on March 10th, 1994, and at Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in north cenâ€" tral Oakville, on May 5th, 1994. Construction of the school began in September, 1992 and completed in July, 1993. The architectural firm of Stafford Haensli Architects Inc. designed the school and Bondfield Construction Company Limited was the general contractor. The total cost of the building project was approximately $4.37â€" million.St. Luke‘s is a two storey school, with an interesting archiâ€" tectural design for a facility which has been built into the side of a hill. The true size of the school â€" which includes a Child Care Centre â€" is not readily apparent from the front on Kingsway Drive. The 46,995 sq. ft. facility is accessible for the handicapped and features a douâ€" ble gymnasium with a stage, a library â€" resource centre, 12 reguâ€" lar classrooms, two kindergarten classrooms, one computer lab, and three specialty rooms (sciâ€" ence, art, and vocal music). St. Luke School finds itself in a unique position since the geoâ€" graphical setting of the Clearview community is resulting in the forâ€" mation of a small town spirit by the area residents. The school is becoming a civic focal point for the community with cultural and youth groups using the school facilities during the evenings throughout the week. The multicultural club, which is open to all students of St. Luke‘s, was initiated to nurâ€" ture tolerance for, and an underâ€" standing of, all cultures in order to help students to develop a global perspective. The St. Luke Gators have gotâ€" ten off to a fast start in athletic competitions. Boys and girls teams in volleyball and basketball have proven to be a force with which to contend. This school opened its doors to just over 600 students in September, â€" and anticipates a projected enrolment of approxiâ€" mately 650 pupils in September, 1994 The school was named after St. Luke â€" the evangelist and the author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles â€" who was the largest single contributor to the New Testament. Through careful observation and precise description, he kept exact notes of what he personally observed and was influenced by his close assoâ€" ciation with St. Paul and his misâ€" sionary journeys. His writings are full of human interest, human sympathy, concern for the poor, chivalry towards women, and a rich record of Christ‘s countless works of mercy. St. Luke was a Gentile by birth and a physician by profession, who assumed the role of a historiâ€" an and a painter. His feast day is Oct. 18th, and Luke‘s symbols in art are the book, bush, ox, and palette. St. Luke is the patron saint of artists and physicians.
