In 1973, he had a ransplant in the nick of time. Doctors old him that within three to six months f the transplant, he would have had no idney function. Three years before his transplant, ohn‘s blood pressure shot up and he as diagnosed with high cholesterol. [wo years later, he was still fatigued ind actually fell down in his bathroom. At this point, doctors told him he was eriously ill. He started dialysis, but oon fell into a coma because of the poiâ€" ons in his system. Shannon‘s condition put a great deal f stress on his wife and seven childrén. "Lcouldn‘t take my youngest son ishing like I had done with his older rothers. And although I was able to be lialysed at home, my wife had to help ecause it took so long. The machine was from Toronto General Hospital and t was a prototype. It was energy effiâ€" cient but impossible to clean. It used to ake 13 hours from start to finish three imes a week." As an engineer, Shannon also had to flow down until his condition mproved. "Instead of being able to hanâ€" e major projects, I was transferred to akville where there were smaller proâ€" ects and I didn‘t have to commute. eople were waiting to see if I would ie," he says matterâ€"ofâ€"factly. Luckily, Shannon only had to be on ialysis two months before a kidney om a child became available. But just ive days after the transplant, doctors ere talking about taking the kidney out cause it wasn‘t functioning properly. e had six rejection episodes and some l THE OAKVILLE BEAVER ; 17 Hunters and Bombers Peace centre shows Innu dacumentary All screenings are at 7 p.m. The Oakville Community Centre for peace, ecology and human rights is located at 148 Kerr St. (just south of Rebecca). | The centre is also making a peaceâ€"quilt for the Innu Nation and is looking for volunteers who can ! sew. Eventually, the probâ€" lems worked themselves out and the kidney stayed. Canada‘s first kidney transplant took place over 30 years ago in Montreal. In 1992, 745 people in Canada received a kidney transplant, but close to 2,000 Canadians are on the waiting list, and there are more than 6,000 dialysis patients in Canada. Every day, approxiâ€" mately seven Canadians learn that their kidneys will fail. There are many different kids of kidâ€" ney disease, but there is no cure, only treatment by dialysis or transplantation. Researchers do know that some forms of this disease are caused by infection or toxins and some are inherited. Unfortunately, the exact cause of many types of kidney disease is not very well understood. Since 1964, when The Kidney Foundation of Canada started, approxiâ€" mately $35â€"million have been given to research programs across the country. One of the benefits of this research is Cyclosporine â€" a drug which suppresses the body‘s natural tendency to reject forâ€" eign objects â€" such as a transplanted (Photo by Peter McCusker) kidney. Furthermore, the success rate of a kidney transplant is 80 to 90% after the first year; the most successful of all vital organ transplants. This means peoâ€" ple like Shannon can resume their previâ€" ous way of life after receiving a transâ€" plant. "There‘s nothing I can‘t do," says Shannon proudly. "I curled 13 games in one week a few weeks ago with the senior league in Oakyville." Shannon is also committed to his community â€" he‘s a driver for the Cancer Society and the Red Cross once a week. And he‘s on the patient services steering committee of The Kidney Foundation for Central Ontario. "You‘ve got to keep your spirits up and don‘t get depressed when you don‘t feel well," he advises anyone experiencâ€" ing kidney problems. "A transplant is a major decision especially if it‘s from a live donor. Don‘t be afraid to look for support and find out all you can about the disease."
