It was anything but a surprise, though, as the New Central School student entered the meet as the top seed in both the 100m (1:08.24) and 200m (2:27.92) butterfly. Rep Hockey BANTAM "A" King Caledon Farms/T.D. Bank Rangers have opened their OMHA sixâ€"point series against Newmarket with two straight wins. Oakville made it to the OMHA finals after knocking off Leamington 2â€"1, right in their own arena on Saturday, in the fifth and final match of their bestâ€"ofâ€"five provincial semiâ€"final series. It‘s been a long haul for the team which has put together four straight series wins against Milton (3â€"0), Fort Erie (3â€" 0), Owen Sound (3â€"2) and finally Leamington (3â€"2). Oakville 2, Newmarket 0 (March 15): a seeâ€"saw battle all the way with the difference being the goaltending of Jeff Parazo who was brilliant in stopping 26 shots for the shutout. Oakville won the game in the third period on goals by Jason Joseph (from Gordie Ball and Matt Froese) and Kevin Beatty (from Jordan Zacny and Kyle MacDonald). Oakville 4, Newmarket 3 (March 14, opening game): a pair of goals by Jeff Husce) including one on a power play, broke open a 2â€"2 tie. Jason Joseph and Kyle MacDonald potted first period goals. Assists went to Matt Mailoa, Kevin Beatty, Jordan Zacny, Bryan Kirsten and Craig Thornton. Oakville 2, Leamington 1 (March 12. series clincher): with 1:19 left to go in regulation time, Paul Sanson‘s blast from the point was tipped by Bryan Kirsten in a wild scramble in front of the net. The first goal, on a power play, emanated from a pretty threeâ€"way passing play from Jordan Zacny to Kyle MacDonald to Kevin Beatty in front of the net. Jeff Parazo was simply outstanding in goal. Leamington 4, Oakville 3 OT (March 6, fourth game): Oakville couldn‘t weather a fourâ€"minute penalty near the end of the game, allowing Leamington to tie it at 3â€"3. Todd Slade picked up two goals and an assist. Mark Smith had the other goal while Bryan Kirsten, Paul Sanson and Regan Walsh also picked up assists. Oakville 4, Leamington 2 (March 5, third game): Jeff Parazo was superb in nets. Jason Joseph racked up a pair of goals with singles to Gordie Ball and Kyle MacDonald. assists went to Paul Sanson, Steve Clarke, Ryan Bayley and Gordie Ball. Busy Blades The Oakville Blades are in the midst of a hectic weekend of hockey in which they are hoping to play three games in three days. However, to force that third game â€" which is scheduled to take place at Oakville Arena on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. â€" the Oakville Blades had to have defeated the Hamilton Kilty Bees either Friday or Saturday. Going into the weekend series, the Blades were behind 2â€"1 in the Provincial Junior A divisional championship series. The seventh game, if necessary, is set for Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., at Hamilton‘s Mountain Arena. West Side Story The Oakvilleâ€"based West Side juveâ€" nile volleyball team are turning into weekend warriors, winning three conâ€" secutive tournaments. Last weekend, the juvenile (18 and under) team won a junior (20 and under) tournament in Hamilton. To get to the final, the juvenile team â€" which counts White Oaks Secondary School student Vijay Vyas and T.A. Blakelock High School student Dan Lewis among its starters â€" had to knock off the West Side club‘s own junior team in an exciting 72â€"minute, three game match (14â€"16, 17â€"16, 15â€"5). The final against the Ganaraska Wolves lasted even longer â€" at about 75 minutes â€" before West Side preâ€" vailed 5â€"15, 16â€"14, 15â€"7. Two weekends ago, the team won the Ontario juvenile open tournament in Bowmanville in another exiting ending, prevailing over Celtique from Quebec 15â€"12, 17â€"16. "That was a great match," remarked Lewis. "In the second game, after being down 0â€"4, we came back and matched them point for point until the end. Each time, both teams rose to the competiâ€" tion. It was one of our best games of the season." Three weekends ago in Montreal, the team became only the second Ontario team in the last 10 years to win the Quebec juvenile open with a tough twoâ€" game match over Celtique. Four weekends ago, the team tested their mettle in a 20â€"team tournament in Pennsylvania where it captured a thirdâ€" place finish along with two of the six individual allâ€"star placings (Lewis and Vyas). Both the juvenile and junior teams are hoping to win their respective provincial championships in midâ€"April in order to earn a trip to the national championships. The three teams (there‘s also a midget team), which practice out of Oakville high schools, attract players from a wide area. Sheridan loses Don‘t ask. Sheridan opened the round robin play with wins over British Columbia‘s Okanogan (9â€"15, 15â€"3, 15â€"6,15â€" 11) and Nova Scotia‘s University Sainteâ€"Anne (15â€"8, 15â€"13, 15â€"12). The wheels fell off in the third game, however, with a loss to Grand Prairie College (6â€"15, 12â€"15, 5â€"15). This dropped Sheridan from first place (and the valuable quarterâ€"final bye that goes with it) all the way down to third place, behind both Okanogan College and Grand Prairie (tieâ€"breaker formulas had to be used since all three sported identical 2â€"1 records). The lowly third place position put Sheridan up against the host and eventuâ€" al national champion Mount Royal College and they again dropped three games in a row (7â€"15, 11â€"15, 8â€"15). Mount Royal College went on to win the national championship in an excitâ€" ing five game match over Quebec‘s Sherbrooke College. Sheridan went on to exact some revenge, beating Grand Prairie in the battle for fifth place (15â€"8, 11â€"15, 15â€" re Here... Sandy noted that the team still has a lot to be proud of, going undefeated in league play and winning the Ontario championship for an unprecedented sixth straight year. Good Selection The Peel Selects juvenile volleyball team will participate in the Ontario provincial championships in midâ€"April in Scarborough. The winner of that event will repreâ€" sent Ontario at the nationals in May in Saskatoon. Among the team‘s 12â€"player roster are two members â€" setter Julie MacMillan and power hitter Cathy Hardman â€" of the Oakville Trafalgar senior girls volleyball team which recently finished fourth at the provincial high school championships. The Peel Selects have compiled an impressive record this season, garnering two golds, three silvers and one bronze (that one in a junior tournament) in six tournaments.
