Like a lot of unemployed people seeking new career paths these days, PetNet has been reâ€"packaged and given a new ‘direction.‘ This time its beneficiaries are animals, including household pets. ~PetNet is a convenient, permanent microâ€"chip identification system which leaves tags and tattoos in the dust. But PetNet‘s use goes beyond household pets; it is used in research on rats and fish, in birds and exotics at the Metro Toronto Zoo, and in race horses (in some porâ€" tions of the United States) to prove the right horse is racing. Formerly used by the U.S. Army as an alternative to dog tags, this neat little piece of technology has been Capacitor identifies lost pets The reason is twoâ€"fold, explains Hobson, and has to do with the product‘s former handlers who failed to market PetNet (formerly known as InfoPet) properly and the previous expense due to the new technology involved. "It used to be three and four times the cost which made it prohibitive both for pet owners and veterinariâ€" ans," says Hobson. "It‘s much more affordable | (now)." Although the cost varies from one vet to another, it ranges between $50 and $60, says Markovie. The hesitation in promoting the product also had to do with accepting such technology 10 years ago; today people are more approving, says Dr. Wolfgang Zenker, who has been involved indirectly with PetNet (and InfoPet) for some 10 years and has been the lone Oakville vet offering the service at his clinâ€" ic for as long. And, adds Lorie Gold, wasn‘t much point in Microâ€"chip Dr. there resurrected by the vetâ€" Antenna Coil Glass Tube offering the service erinary world as a failâ€" when the â€" local saferyidentification The PetNet microâ€"chip measures 11 mm by 21 MM. _ pymane society method. wasn‘t equipped with scanning equipment which is The microâ€"chip, no bigger than a grain of rice â€" is inserted under the skin between the shoulder blades (in the case of dogs and cats), explains PetNet spokesperson Gail Markovic. "It‘s like a routine vaccine," says Markovic. The implantation of the microâ€"chip is done very simply with such a high quality needle that ""it slides into the skin very easily; they don‘t flinch," adds Dr. Scott Hobson, former chairman of the Oakville Veterinary Association, which is only now promoting the product locally although it has been around for some 10 years. not the case today. Currently, PetNet boasts more than 80,000 pets registered nationally with an average of eight pet recoveries daily. If a pet owner wishes to take advantage of the sysâ€" tem, most Oakville veterinary offices are now equipped with the technology as are many humane societies, the Oakville Humane Society among them. When an owner has their pet outfitted with a microâ€" chip, they fill out a registration form complete with pertinent owner information should the dog or cat (See ‘Central data. . .‘ page 14) INTRODUCING MAXIMUM 2000 Colouts mCSs W t Tz * Over 2,000 colours at $19.99 LATEX SATIN LUSTRE Best for living, dining and children‘s rooms Scrubbable finish.
