Every room and picture pre- sents a unique situation, but these guidelines can help. 1. The size of the picture is the most important detail which gov- erns where it should be hung. If it is a large, important piece of art, it should be located on a wall where it can be the focus of attention; over a mantel or an important piece fumi- ture (fig.l) 2. When several pictures are hung as a grouping, they should form a geometric shape such as a square, rectangle or oval (fig.2). Many small pictures can be used together to complete an attractive arrangement if you place them fair- ly close to one another...the frames forming the outside edges of the sides, top and bottom should be kept in a straight line if possible (fig.5). 3. Only use a picture if the space seems empty without one. 4. The centre of an important picture should hang slightly above eye level. The most common mis- take is hanging pictures too high. 5. A grouping of pictures should not be wider than the furniture beneath it (fig.3). The spacing of frames for a grouping is important; if the pic- tures are too far apart, you will lose the unity of the grouping. 7. With a group of several pic- tures of similar dimensions, it is best to keep the lower frames as a continuous horizontal line. 8. Stepped or diagonal arrange- ments are good for stairs, but in a room it will create such a dominant Today’s consume buys to feel good The furniture market is constantly changing, as are consumer lifestyles. The days of conspicuous consump- tion are gone. Today’s consumer buys to feel good â€" to feel literally “at home” with his or her purchases. To satisfy that need takes a combina- tion of esthetic appeal and comfort since the consumer buys primarily to please themselves. And manufactur- ers are well aware of this, offering consumers furniture designed for “cocooning” and conviviality. The collections this year fit right _in with that trend. It’s farewell to austere right angles, geometric shapes, and loud colors; hello to rounded-off silhouettes, good old wood for that surefire feeling of security, romantic florals, earth tones, and “tonic” colors. There’s a tip of the hat to yesterday, reinter- preted for today: Country, Shaker, Missions, Southwest, and Queen Anne styles help create a wonderful atmosphere of warmth. Contemporary styles are softened, with curves, pared-down lines, and sumptuous finishes â€" warmth and simplicity personified. One new and noteworthy trend is the “urban prim- itive” look, in which fabrics and material have that “worn” look even though they’ve just come off the assembly line. Wood remains the numero uno material in terms of popularity. Rich, light woods wear just the barest hint ' of varnish to let the natural grain shine through. An up-and-coming trend seen in several collections is the combo of light wood plus color. Silhouettes are generally prim and proper, with decorative or oma- Son the largest uloctlon In error II Closet Ideas at our Mississauga Showroom Since 1971 J..I.
