The graceful but dramatic movements of hand and feet are precise and intricate, and intertwined with great expression of face and body. The devotional style is the unifiâ€" cation of dance, drama and rhythm, says Kanchana whose body is a natural ‘canvas‘ for the artform, her movements in elegant sync with the south Indian classiâ€" cal music. But it was two years ago when Kanchana decided to pursue her dance seriously, a decision sealed after watching the beauty of the acclaimed Lata Pada, a "disciple" of India‘s prestigious institute for the performing arts and student of its director, Guru Kalyanasundaram. "It was ‘love‘ at first sight," says mom Padma, who says the family knew Kanchana‘s potential could be realized under the meticâ€" ulous instruction of Pada, who devoted her life to dance after the death of her husband and children in the 1982 Air India crash. "We are very honored to have her come here" (Pada‘s moved her school, Sampradaya, to Mississauga from Sudbury). parents travelling to Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Boston to attend Indian festivals and expose their daughters â€" 11â€"yearâ€"old sister Savithri also dances â€" to their culâ€" ture.
