Family grateful for organ donor program *%g (Continued from page 1) friendly grin and he‘s full of life and the impishness that is inherent in a boy. Chris is one of those kids you immediately like. He hops off his bike, yanks at the neck of his Tâ€"shirt to display a big scar running down the centre of his chest. "I was screaming. I didn‘t think I‘d live through it," says Chris about the news his heart was destroyed and he would have to undergo a transplant to save his life. If Chris was terrified, his family was scared, bewildered and racked with grief at the thought of losing their son. In one short week, they had gone from thinking their son had the flu to facing a major operaâ€" tion â€" only four of which had ever been done at Sick Kids prior to Chris. "We were in a total state of disâ€" belief...we thought, ‘How can this be happening?*" says Sue. Originally from Mississauga, Chris was always a healthy active kid. "I was always on my bike," he smiles. Then, last summer, while away at summer camp, Chris became "lethargic‘. He couldn‘t keep food down and any form of phsyical exertion was out of the question. His parents picked him up and through a stroke of fate, he wound up at McMaster Hospital in Hamilton where his pediatrician â€" who had been in touch with camp counsellors â€" was on call and wantâ€" ed to see him. After the doctor listened to Chris‘ heart and completed his tests, a pediatric cardiologist was called in and the family informed. "If we had waited (not gone to McMaster) he might not have seen the next day..." says Sue. Chris was immediately taken to Sick Kids by ambulance where he Opportunities ‘94 is a an easy to handle guide to International investing. "Chris deteriorated very quickâ€" ly," says Sue who spent long, exhausting hours, as did her husâ€" band, by Chris‘ bedside. "It‘s very difficult to watch your child going down hill so quickly. The doctors said kids do die while waiting. We were very fortunate Chris made it and we think he made it because he was such a healthy kid." Chris remembers waking up to a multitude of tubes in his body and feeling extremely weak, but after this miracle of modern medicine, he went home two weeks later. "I‘d rather have my old heart but if it‘s not good enough..." shrugs Chris, who wrote a letter of thanks to the donor family, unknown to the Scarborough family. "It‘s kind of like recycling. I‘m very happy." Since that incredible day, Nov. 27th, 1993, Chris has lived a relaâ€" tively normal life. He attends Grade 8, eats healthy foods, plays basketâ€" ball and pinball and of course, rides his bikes through the streets of north Oakville. Every three months he treks into Sick Kids to undergo testing for signs of rejection and once a month for blood work. He‘s put on 40 pounds because of the necessary medication, but his sense of humor is intact. He proudly sports the scar and readily dispenses information to curious friends and classmates. "I think he looks at life a little differently. Not that he wasn‘t before, but he‘s more sensitive to other kids. For us, you put your priâ€" orities in place. Sure the job is important but family comes first. Right now, it‘s important for me to be here, for us to be a family. We all lead such busy lives and sometimes you lose track that it could all be gone tomorrow. You have to live for today." The Scarborough family also never forgets that their happiness has been derived from someone else‘s tragedy. Sue emphasizes the importance of organ donation and says she understands that Chris‘ heart was a "gift given at a very difâ€" ficult time." : Cosmetic Family Dentistry We are very excited about our recently renovated office â€" from our Waiting Room that features a GAS FIREPLACE to our MOVIE GLASSES offered in every treatment area.
