Responsible Care: A Total Commitment® Is proud to recognize our local firefighters for their dedication to the community Member CCPA Gestion responsable: un engagement total" 1. The answer is (a). â€" Each year, fires are started by the careâ€" less disposal of smoking materials. Ashtrays should be emptied in metal containers or in the toilet. Many people each year are killed or injured after falling asleep with smoking materials. In a maijority of cases, this occurs because they have taken medicaâ€" tion or consumed alcohol. And finally, check upholstered furniâ€" ture for smoldering materials. The lit end of a cigarette can be knocked loose and fall into folds of a sofa or chair. 2. The answer is (d). â€"â€" Test all the smoke detectors in your home at least once a month. 3. The answer is (b). â€" Keep matches and lighters up high, out of the reach of younger children, preferably in a locked cabinet. Teach children at an early age that matches and lighters are tools for adults, not toys. Young children should be told to tell an adult if they find matches, while older children can be taught to bring found matches and lighters to an adult. 4. The answer is (c). â€" Install fresh batteries in your smoke detectors at least once a year or sooner if the detector chirps, signalling low battery power. Use an anniversary, when you turn your clocks back, or some other annual event to remind you to replace the batteries. If your smoke detector is more than 10 years old, replace it with a new one.
