THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B7Wednesday, July 7, 1999 Jazz club comes to town Opening performance kicks off during the Oakville Jazz Festival Oakville's "sophisticated lady" of jazz, Anna Romain, is setting out to compete with Toronto's famous Mon­ treal Bistro in Oakville by introducing an Uptown Jazz series, which will fea­ ture different jazz artists each Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Pickled Pep­ per, 1011 Upper Middle Rd. (in the plaza at Eighth Line). And what better time to kick-off this new jazz series than during the Oakville Jazz Festival? Jim Galloway will open north Oakville's jazz series on Sunday (July 11th), along with the weekly house band which will include Anna Romain, of course, Rosemary Galloway, and Norman Amadio. Galloway is an internationally known jazz artist who makes regular appearances in the United States where he is accepted as one of the few musi­ cians to master the soprano saxophone. He also tours annually in Europe, and has appeared in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. His recordings for Sackville Records have helped establish the label as one of the most respected in jazz. He has also recorded with such jazz greats as Buddy Tate, Vic Dickenson, Ralph Sutton, Jay McShann and Milt Hinton. The talented jazz musician fronts his own small groups and big band, and has formed the all-star Jazz Cana­ da group that toured across the country. (905) 827-6911 join performing arts camp Joe Fazakas on guitar and Michelle Anderson on flute will join the other qualified staff at the Oakville Performing Arts Camp. Fazakas was a silver medal win­ ner at the Royal Conservatory of Music in 1997 in classic guitar. He also composes and performs jazz, rock, and pop music in addition to classical styles. He has extensive training in the Suzuki guitar method and has taught piano and guitar to students from age 3 to 17. He will teach both children and adults at the camp. Anderson graduated in both flute and music history from Queen's University. She has taught flute by traditional methods for 14 years from beginners to university entrance, and is now taking training in Suzuki flute as well. Fazakas will be teaching at the camp both weeks (July 12th and July 19th). Anderson will be teach­ ing for the second week only. Jamie Thompson will be back as the flute teacher for the first week. Other qualified teachers at the camp will include six on violin and viola, five on piano (traditional and Suzuki), two on cello, and two for art as well as dance, drama, recorder and voice teachers. Students are accepted from four-years old to adult from com­ plete beginners to accomplished musicians. Babysitting is available for younger sib­ lings.
