C2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, July 7, 1999 HOT SUMMER SAVINGS Physiotherapists can advise on appropriate sports program s You may not be going for gold, but you can still try for higher, faster and stronger with hot tips from the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) on the top-10 summer sports activities. The first thing to realize, according to the Canada's Olympic-veteran sports physiothera pists, is that "no pain...no gain" -- the prevailing mantra of today's fitness buffs -- is a myth. A better motto, they say, is "train, don't strain." "You should listen to your body and slow down when you feel uncomfortable," says phys iotherapist Tina Doney. "It's fine to push yourself a bit, but you should err on the side of caution, especially when you're beginning." Summer is terrific for outdoor sports and fit ness, but we should choose activities carefully and combine them for an optimum all-around LOOKING FOR EXCITING WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HORSE, IT'S ALL RIGHT HERE IN THE OAKVILLE BEAVER HOME improvgrnerrfc S u p e r s h a d e L t d 55%off| ALL LEVOLOR BLINDS F r e e S h o p a t H o m e S e r v i c e ' Vertical • Venetians Pleated Shades • Wood Blinds and much more 897-5044 K E V IN SM ITH H a n d y m a n C O N N E C T 1 C V N . The fun factor is also important. After all, the idea is to get outside and have a good time doing something you enjoy. "As experts in movement and mobility, phys iotherapists can offer the best advice on exercise programs that are appropriate for individual needs," she explains. "We can help people find the right combination of activities to improve their own physical fitness and avoid injury." Before you hit the courts, the links or the decks, there are four key areas to look at when you're considering the benefits of any sport, adds Pat Richardson, another physiotherapist at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. You want to look at any sport to determine whether it helps build body strength, improve flexibility, promotes coordi nation and balance and works the heart and lungs. Sports that offer all, or most of these benefits, rank high est. Combinations of activi ties that offer improvements in all of these areas are even better because you are work ing all of your muscle groups. Based on this checklist, the 10 top summer sports are: Swimming, soccer, roller blading, cycling, tennis, canoeing, yoga or Tai Chi, hiking, walking and golf. For the recommended all-around body work out, canoeing, which improves upper body strength, teams up well with cycling for the legs, thighs and bottom. Golf can be on par with other recommended activities if you walk the course. Be cautious of the repetitive swing action, particularly if you're hitting a bucket of balls, because it can cause back and shoulder strain. Once you've decided whether to take the plunge or try out for the team, the first rule is to train for the sport so that you'll feel good, enjoy it more and will more likely stay at it. Taking lessons in any sport is valuable to learn the safe and proper techniques. Like it or not, you have to take your age into account whether you're in-line cruising or work ing on your backhand. "Sports which promote flexibility are good for the mature athlete," Doney advises. "Aging results in reduction in join and muscle elasticity and it becomes more important to work on prop er warm-ups and frequent stretching exercises." Here are more tips for outdoor summer work outs: • Bring along an ample supply of water or electrolyte-rich sports drinks to avoid dehydra tion which can cause muscle cramps and injury. The body needs an extra litre of water during every hour of outdoor physical activity. • use sun screen and wear loose, protective clothing to avoid harmful UV rays and wear proper safety equipment such as helmets, knee and elbow pads and good footwear. • Cool down in the shade with relaxing stretch ing exercises to reduce muscle stiffness. If you are seeing, or are going to see a physio therapist, make sure you are seeing a registered physiotherapist. You can call the Ontario College of Physiotherapy at (416) 591-3828 to check.
