Offer expires July 9/99 ^ 'to m 1m I d ^ t e d ^ P H H i Wednesday, July 7, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Be water smart this summer 1. Always wear a lifejacket! • Pick one and wear it...only five percent of Canadian drowning victims were wearing a lifejacket or person al flotation device (PFD) properly. • B o a t i n g without your PFD is a recipe for disas ter... half or more of victims in power boats, canoes, kayaks, rowboats and sailboats were not wearing PFDs. • One-quarter of all boating drown ing victims and one- third of canoeing vic tims did not even have a lifejacket or PFD in the boat. 2. Boat sober and ride sober...don't drink and drive your boat, snowmobile or car. • Alcohol adversely affects balance, judg ment and reaction time. • Alcohol is involved in 36 percent of all preventable water-related deaths and almost half (47 percent) of fatalities where the victim was an adult between 18 and 64 years of age. • Alcohol is involved in half or more of fatal snowmobiling, recreational powerboating, boat travel and automobile travel incidents. • Alcohol is involved in half of deaths where a PFD is not worn, and two-thirds of deaths after dark. 3. Drive your powerboat or personal watercraft responsibly. • Stay low, drive at moderate speeds and be aware of changing weather conditions to avoid capsizing, swamping or falling overboard. • Capsizing, swamping or falling over board are involved in three-quarters of fatal boat ing incidents. • Drive with extreme caution and proper lights after dark. 4. Always supervise young children near water.,.if you're not within arm's reach, you've gone too far! • For two- to four-year-olds, backyard pools are the number one risk location. • For young children under two years old, the number one risk location is the bathtub, fol lowed by backyard pools. These young victims have often been left alone. Drowning is a silent killer...you cannot expect to hear a cry for help, so you must always be able to see your child. 5. Learn to swim! • One-third of drowning victims are non swimmers. 6. Don't walk, play or snowmobile on thin or unknown ice! • One out of every 12 drowning victims plunges to their death through unsafe ice. • Don't drive your snowmobile or vehicle on ice after dark...half of all ice-related fatalities and three-quarters of all snowmobiling drown- ings occur after dark. • Avoid pressure ridges and areas with current. River ice is especially dangerous; it can vary dramatically in thickness just a few steps apart. • Warn your children about the dangers of thin ice; keep children and pets off thin ice. 7. Never dive into shallow water. • On average 34 Canadians become par tially or completely paralyzed each year as a result of breaking their necks in water-related incidents. • Most of these incidents occur while div ing into shallow water. 8. Play and swim in supervised areas. • 99 percent of drowning deaths occur in situations where there is no lifeguard supervision. 9. Don't go in the water alone.Always swim with a buddy. • Four out of 10 victims are alone when they drown. • Never swim alone, even in a backyard pool. 10. Learn lifesaving skills. • Two-thirds of Canadian victims can swim but still drown; just learning to swim is not enough.
