Wednesday, July 7, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 Oakville Soccer Club house league report Coyotes lose tough pair The Oakville Coyotes found themselves the victims of two shootouts in Major Junior A Roller Hockey last weekend, falling 17- 15 at the hands of the first place Niagara Panthers last Friday at Oakville Arena and 16-14 to the Kitchener Roller Rats last Sunday in Kitchener. On Friday, the Coyotes traded goals with the Panthers throughout the first half, before falling behind 12-7 in the third quarter. The comeback came late in the game when the Coyotes scored six goals in the last five minutes of play. Jeff Wells led the attack, popping a natural hat trick late in the game. Unfortunately, the comeback fell short when the Panthers fin ished the game off with an empty net goal in the last minute of play. Stu Matheson, a call-up from the Coyotes' midget team, made an impressive debut in the contest, netting a goal and adding an assist. Other scorers on the night for the Coyotes were Jeff Elia (3), Jeff Wells (3), RJ Carr (2), Kyle MacDonald (2), Jamie Barlow, Shane Labelle and Steve Kinnunen. Assists went to Shane Labelle (4), Ryan Fitzsimmons (4), Jeff Elia (3), Brandon Cordua (3), Jeff Wells (2), Steve Kinnunen (2), Jeff Wells (2), RJ Carr and Jamie Barlow. Sunday night, the Coyotes ended up on the short end against the last place Roller Rats in Kitchener. The Coyotes allowed seven first quarter goals, which seemed too much to overcome. However, the squad kept chipping away and by half way through the third quarter had narrowed the margin to one goal. In a finish similar to Friday's, the Roller Rats capped the con test with an empty net goal in the last minute. "It was another poor defensive effort," said GM Jay Labelle. Scoring for the Coyotes were Jeff Wells (3), Jeff Elia (3), RJ Carr, Dave Dunn, Jamie Barlow, Shane Labelle, Steve Kinnunen, Steve Elia and Stu Matheson. Assists went to RJ Carr (3), Kyle MacDonald (3), Shane Labelle (3), Jeff Wells (2), Dave Dunn (2), Stu Matheson (2), Jeff Elia, Steve Kinnunen, Ryan Fitzsimmons and Brandon Cordua. The Coyotes must regroup to play a very important game this Friday (July 9), 7:30 p.m., at Oakville Arena against the Buffalo Jr. Wings. With the playoffs just around the comer, the Coyotes need to solve their defensive problems while keeping the offensive output intact. Oakville Club hosts doubles over-34 tennis invitational The Oakville Club is hosting the Cogeco@Home Men's and Women's invitational doubles over-34 tennis tournament, presented by Budds Imported Cars of Oakville. The tournament, which kicked off last night with a preliminary round, wraps up on Saturday with the semifinals and finals, the men playing at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, and the women at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
