THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 23, 1999 The Oakville Longhorns will try to extend their record to a perfect four wins in a row this Saturday as they host the Markham Raiders. Markham has only lost one game on the young season in the Northern Football Conference, the last bastion of senior football in Canada, and that was to the Longhorns. So if anyone is going to end the 'Horns enviable string of six successive NFC playoff titles, it looks like Markham has the best shot, and this will be their last shot at making a /Statement before the wind-up o f the regular season. Oakville won their previous encounter 21- 12 in Markham. In last Saturday's action, Oakville defeated visiting Sault Ste. Marie 24-6 while Markham defeated Sudbury 28-13. As usual the 'Horns early season games are held at Nelson Stadium in Burlington, and action this Saturday gets underway at 7 p.m. INVICTAS In Ontario Varsity Football League action, the Halton Invictas were doubled 26-13 by the Huronia Stallions. The Invictas have an overn ighter to W indsor/Essex this weekend. W ilden fin ish es fourth in M ontrea l (Continued from page D2) Meanwhile, Wilden claimed his third top- five finish of the 1999 K/TAC season June 13 with a hard-fought fourth-place finish. Wilden, who started fifth, battled William Langhome of Washington, D.C. for fourth place over the first 13 of the event's 27 laps around the 2.745-mile circuit in Montreal before taking over the position for good on the pit straight heading into the track's first turn. The race was won by polesitter Alexandre Tagliani of Lachenaie, Quebec, who led from flag to flag. Tagliani crossed the finish line .41 seconds ahead of Buddy Rice of Phoenix, who was followed in by Anthony Lazzaro of Acworth, Georgia. "A podium finish would have been nice, but fourth-place points are good," said Wilden, a Burlington native who moved to Oakville three years ago. "Right now the team is looking for ward to a well-deserved break after three race weekends in a row, then we'll do some testing before the next race at Elkhart Lake (Sunday, July 11), where we're looking forward to doing well after finishing third there last year." Wilden earned 12 championship points for his effort and how has 49 for the season, which places him fourth in the overall K/TAC point standings behind Lazzaro (85), Rice (58) and Tagliani (57). He has one lifetime win on the K/TAC cir cuit, last year in Cleveland. O ffe n c e s p u tte rs The Oakville Lightning U-15 AA boys rep soccer team's attack has sput tered on the team's recent two-game road trip and the result was a 3-1 loss against North York Azzurri and a 0-0 draw with Niagara Falls. The lone goal was scored by Stephen Hill on a feed from Chad Aboud. Steve Marinic, Curtis Marchildon and Kojo Beduh also had solid perfor mances. In the 0-0 draw, keeper Rob Stein earned his second shutout of the season while Aboud, Lee Bekker, Mark Misiak, Mamie and Nick Servedio had solid games for Oakville. Bolts record is 2-2-1. In Halton Men's Hockey League play, the Penguins eked out a 3-2 win over the first-place Flyers. Pat Gaughn scored the game winner after teammates Ruben Benegbi and Paul Munzar had each scored one. The Flyers replied with markers from Tom Nowicin and Todd Brennand but ran out of time before catching the Penguins. With the win, the Penguins improve their record to 2-2-1. good for fifth place, while the Flyers lead in the standings dwindles to one point. The Halton Men's Summer League still has openings for play ers in the 16-20 game schedule for adults looking to play non-con- tact, recreational hockey in the summer.
