Oakville's Kenny Wilden will be back in Toronto for the Molson Indy, after all. Last year, he finished third in the Molson Indy 1998 KOOL/Toyota Atlantic Championship (K/TAC) event, but this year the series is not returning to Toronto. Wilden, however, announced last week, that he will make his first career start in the PPG- Dayton Indy Lights Championship Series on July 18 in Toronto. Wilden, who is ranked fourth in this year's K/TAC standings after five events, will drive a T97/20 Lola prepared by the Brian Stewart Racing team on the 1.721 mile Exhibition Place temporary street circuit near downtown Toronto. His sponsors are the same for his full-time K/TAC entry (he drives for the Michael Shank Racing team) and they are Newcourt and TrizecHahn Corporation. "I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to represent my sponsors, Newcourt and TrizecHahn in this year's Molson Indy," Wilden said. "It's a tremen dous event that gets bigger and bet ter every year, and as a native of the Toronto area, one that I enjoy more than any other in racing. "I'm also pleased that I will have the support of Brian Stewart Racing. Brian's team has a long history of fielding race-winning cars and a number of its drivers have gone on to race Champ Cars -- Paul Tracy, Bryan Herta, P.J. Jones and Cristianno da Matta, to name a few. So I feel confident that we'll be able to challenge the regu lar Indy Lights frontrunners for the win." Brian Stewart Racing owner Brian Stewart said, "I'm very happy to have Kenny driving for us in the Molson Indy. As a Toronto- based team, it has always been our goal to assist and help promote Canadian drivers, and Kenny is cer tainly one of the best in the Atlantic series right now. He will test with us for three days at Blackhawk Farms Raceway (near Chicago) in early July, so we should be fairly well prepared going into the race." ABOUT TOWNE Re/Max Aboutowne raises $5,000 for LIFE Hike fundraiser RE/MAX presents a check to support LIFE Hike. Left to right: Augy Carnovale, broker, RE/MAX Aboutowne; Helen Lightbody, sales represen tative, RE/MAX Aboutowne; Cathy Mulvale, founder, Strategies for LIFE and LIFE Hike; and Barbara Jackson, assistant to Augy Carnovale. Under normal circumstances, Re/Max Aboutowne Realty Corp. Broker/Owner Augy Carnovale would not take kindly to being asked to 'Take a Hike." But since this particular hike meant raising funds to combat the insidious flesh eating disease (necrotizing fascitis or NF), Augy eagerly participated in the first LIFE Hike in Canada. LIFE Hike is the fundraising arm of Strategies for LIFE, a non-profit organiza tion that plans to raise at least $ 10-million over the next 10 years for research, pro fessional education and public awareness of strep bacteria and related illnesses. Cathy Mulvale is both the founder of Strategies for LIFE and a survivor of NF. Her connection to Re/Max is through Helen Lightbody, a real estate representative with Re/Max Aboutowne and president of the Oakville Milton & District Real Estate Board. Helen approached Augy about the hike and the wheels soon sped into motion to involve Re/Max agents as major participants. A total of 14 agents and support staff took part in the hike, held on June 12th in the trails of Glen Abbey, and between pledges and donations, Re/Max raised a total of $5,000 for this most worthy of causes. "Re/Max was by far the leading cash sponsor and that was a huge surprise for me," says Cathy Mulvale. "I think it's great, because I know so many of the agents there and it was great to see all those friendly faces on the trails. It was also a huge boost for the LIFE Hike as Re/Max is everywhere; they're the number one real estate organization in Canada." Barb Jackson, Augy's assistant, organized Re/Max's participation in the hike. "It felt very good being part of something that's so brand new and something that can affect anybody," said Barb. She said Re/Max Aboutowne wanted to give the first LIFE Hike a good kick-start and ensure its success. "Cathy Mulvale is such an inspiration and she was quite emotional that day. It was gratifying to have so many people come out for the hike," Barb added. Cathy admits she was very emotional that day, not just because of the tremendous turnout (363 participants), but for deeper reasons. "I'm so happy to be alive and I have a glowing, rosy outlook, but what I was n't prepared for was the number of people out there who have lost husbands and wives and children to the strep bacteria. There were 12 survivors on the walk and all of that made me very emotional." Cathy said that as she thanked the people for being there. She felt overcome by the magnitude of everything involved - being a survivor of NF herself, having her two beautiful children and loving, supportive husband by her side, seeing the other survivors who had the courage to go on the hike, and thinking of those who hadn't survived and the loved ones they left behind. But this intensely spirited young women is always the optimist and not one to dwell on the dark side of life. It was this spirit and optimism that prompted her desire to "give something back" and start thinking about Strategies for LIFE the day she left the hospital, and she never stops planning ahead. Using the generous sponsorship of Re/Max as an example, Cathy can confidently approach other com panies to sponsor future hikes. Already, some have come forward to help, she said, and she is enormously grateful to Re/Max Aboutowne for their tremendous gen erosity.
