BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE FESTIVAL By Nienke T. Jonkman OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF If you haven't heard of the Oakville Waterfront Festival, you must have been out of town for the last eight years! This year marks the Eighth Annual Oakville Waterfront Festival, and there's an exciting line-up of events and enter tainment for the weekend of June 25 to 27. HOW DOES IT ALL COME TOC ETHER? The Festival is organized by a large team of volunteers and sponsors, and this team is organized by the Festival's executive director, Linda Spalding. 'The volunteers do all the work and deserve the credit," says Spalding, "so I try to stay in the background." It is Spalding's responsibility to keep the committees focused on their respective jobs, so everything gets done. 'Then I help out when it's needed," she adds. According to Spalding, the whole point of the volunteer element of the Festival is to offer valuable experience for both personal objectives and other volunteer encounters, as well as a better insight on how such an event is put together. Spalding has over 20 years of experience in the marketing side of festival and event management. She grew up in the Halton area, and then pursued her career in Ottawa. When the opportunity at the Festival came up, she jumped on it because she wanted very much to return to the area and be around for future grandchildren. "I'm glad I came back, I like Oakville and its people," she says. "In a lot of ways it's very much like Ottawa - user- friendly with lots of amenities. There are green spaces, walking trails and everything is rooted in a sense of history. The community is very much in touch with what's around them. I find it refreshing." The role of executive director of the Oakville Waterfront Festival becomes increasingly more difficult with each year due to rising costs and the need to do a little better than the year before. This is Spalding's second year in the role, and she is committed to a bigger, better Festival while maintain ing the cost of the buttons and continuing to make a cash contribution to the community. "We've given back more than $650,000 to the communi ty in cash dollars," she states proudly. "It's an important objective of the Festival." Volunteers add up hourly wages which are donated to their selected charities. Aside from cash donations, however, Spalding believes that volunteer involvement - with any organization or group - strengthens community ties and mutually benefits the com munity as a whole. "I see it working here," she says. "Lisa Dodd set up the Festival and kept an iron grasp on its community base. She didn't deviate in spite of many opportunities. That's what's kept the Festival strong, and I hope to keep it that way." When asked what she likes best about the Oakville Waterfront Festival, Spalding admits she gets excited about events for children. "I can't wait to see their faces, so innocent and wide- eyed," she laughs. She looks forward to the Techni-Cal Superdog Show and the Titanic Slide. "I usually take at least 97 rolls of film," she says.
