Wednesday, June 23, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D1 Contemporary furnishings favoured for home offices With the increase in Canadians running their own small businesses and working from home, statistics show that the office furnishings business today is valued at $2.2 billion. The most popular new designs are contemporary, stylish shapes that are ergonomic in design. Cherry is still the num ber one colour choice but new finishes such as pear, brandy and cognac are growing in impor tance. Sears Canada recently announced a new ven ture to service Canada's growing office furniture business. The initiative targets the SOHO (small office/home office) market. Sears presently offers the program in its Mississauga location at the Erin Mills Power Centre Mall. The SOHO presentation will consist of both domestic and commercial grade office fur niture suites. However, all Sears stores with furni ture departments will have access to all offered SOHO merchandise through special order. "According to the statistics, the Canadian home office furniture business is flourishing at a 10% annual growth rate," says Dan Weare, Sears Canada's National Business Manager, Furniture. The program also includes merchandise from top names in office furniture such as Sauder, Bestar, Bush and O'Sullivan. From these names, customers have a choice of over 50 styles and colours and office chairs are available in 180 vari ations of fabric and colour. Look for safety and quality when shopping for bunkbeds Bunkbeds have been a great way of stacking kids and adults into a limited amount of space for decades. If you are shopping for a bunkbed, the most important concerns are safety and quality. Safety concerns have mounted over the years due to some tragic accidents resulting from poorly designed structures and low quality materials. Voluntary Safety Guidelines developed by the ASTM (American Society of Testing and Material) for manufacturers and importers have resulted in safer bunkbed systems. "Safety, quality and durability are our main concerns when building our bunkbeds," says Sherry Deming, director of Retail Operations for Crate Designs. This Ontario-based manufacturer carries a full range of bunkbed sizes for both chil dren and adults. "Our sales staff are proud that our bunkbeds are designed to meet ASTM guidelines, and are able to explain the features a consumer should look for when making a bunkbed pur chase." Features to insist upon include: 1. Upper bunk must have guard rails on all four sides and at least 5 inches from top of mattress to upper edge of guard rail. 2. Mattresses that are snug fitting allowing for no more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) gap at any point between mattress and frame. This will prevent a child from wedging between the mattress and the bunk. 3. The distance between the bedframe and the bottom rails should not exceed 3.5 inches (9 cm) to prevent a child from becoming trapped. 4.
