Margaret Bennett, tournament organizer, would sincerely like to thank the tournament sponsors -- Pepsi, Danone (for bringing yogurt to the players) and to Air Cell Communications (for donating cell phones for the weekend). "I would also like to thank the Girls Under 11-A rep team for spend ing countless hours hanging up nets. The Oakville Crusaders snuck past one of their oldest rivals in Ontario Premier A rugby action on Saturday with a 20-16 victory. The Toronto Irish Canadians entered the game undefeated and tied for first. Despite this motivating factor 'the Cru' started the game a bit flat and allowed the Irish a 10 point lead. - The game gradually evened out as the Oakville side scored a try through captain Ryan Morrison and a second through Prop forward Ethan Gusfa. The game breaking moment was once again supplied by a full field electrify ing run by Robbie Wolfenden. In a move orchestrated by replace ment fullback Craig Goom, Wolfenden streaked 70 yards and broke through the tackle of the Ontario fullback Gareth Pettigrew. This score, combined with a greater defensive effort, was enough to hold the opposition off until full time. It was a full day of action at Cru Park. The second annual midgets tourna ment was held, the women's team defeated Stratford 61-0, the men's 3rds upset the Irish Canadian 2nds 18-11, and the Crusaders 2nds completed the sweep by defeating the always tough Metropolitan Police Wild Boars 15-10. The Crusaders have a busy week end at home and the games are on Sunday as a result of the Canada vs. USA Test match at Fletcher's Field in Markham on Saturday, 4 p.m. Crusader Phil Murphy will be sit ting on the Canuck bench hoping for his first cap. He's the first Crusader to join the national team since David Spears in 1991, and the club congratu lates him. He's also been invited to the national training camp for their upcoming match in Tonga. Murphy won't be the only Crusader seeing additional action this weekend. Several Crusaders will suit up for the Toronto entry which will play its first game in the National Super League and they include Ethan Gusfa, Layne Gardiner, Ian Dann, Randy Warrington and Rob Wolfenden. The Halton Men's Hockey League still has openings for players and one goalie in the 16 or 20 game schedule for adults looking to play non-contact, recreational hockey in the summer. Games are in prime time on week- nights at River Oaks Arena in Oakville. For info, call 849-9712. June 10 game of the week: the Flyers maintained their first place standing by doubling the Stars 4-2 in a close game. Flyers marksmen Kirk Brennand and Jeff O'Rourke each had a pair for the winners. Assists went to Toodd Brennand (2) and Stefan Nowak. Chris Giles and Doug Greenwood replied for the Stars with Mike Manella assisting. June 4, game of the week: the Predators put an end to the Sharks' winning streak with a narrow 4-2 win. The Sharks had the lead, went down by a goal, tied the game and then were beaten by two Predator goals. Scorers for the Predators were Kevin Ellis, Doug Weeks, Rod Morton and Vic Dimelo. For the Sharks, Joe Myers and Steve Walsh each had a single and assisted on each others' goal. May 31, game of the week: the final goal of a natural hat trick by Denis Desrosiers broke a 3-3 dead lock with only seven minutes remaining. Des O 'Kelly had the other Sharks marker. Shawn Blaj, Bill Hare and Jason Lloyd replied for the Ducks.
