Oakville Beaver Weekend 9Sunday, June 13,' 1999 Toddler battles rare form of cancer (Continued from page 1) undergoing chemotherapy to ensure traces of it are gone from her liver." Lindsay's mother, Jo Shanks, said only 20 children a year in Canada' are diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. It can disappear as fast as it appears in a child under six months, but it's usually fatal in children over five-years-old. Right now, the prognosis is good for the energetic toddler who is learning to walk and talk despite her medical setback. Doctors are amazed - they've never known a child undergoing chemo who has learned to walk and her mom cred ited Nicholas for much of her progress. "If they hadn't been bom four years and two days apart, you'd swear they were twins," joked Shanks who took leave from her job at the City of Mississauga to care for Lindsay. "Nicholas is a big help, picking up toys and tidying up for me. When she's having a bad day, she brightens up as soon as she sees him." The special bond between the two siblings is major factor in keeping the family's spirits up while she goes through chemother apy treatments expected to end this September, "They're very close," confirmed O'Connor. "Lindsay calls her big brother 'bubba' and loves giving him big kisses. She won't eat if he's not around." Shanks recallsed the closeness between her children existed before Lindsay was bom. Nicholas always wanted a baby sister and was 'pleased as punch' when she was bom. "He loves her to distraction," she chuckled. "1 don't think she would be recuperating as quickly if he wasn't around. He's the driving force in keeping her going." Unfortunately, last Saturday Nicholas' dream of presenting telethon organizers with his money during the televised broadcast fell through. When the entire family awoke at 5 a.m. to venture down to the studio after a difficult week of chemotherapy sessions, his dona tion was accepted, but Nicholas didn't get his big chance to say thanks on the air. "He wanted to thank everyone for their generosity and to especial ly thank Dr. Grant and Dr. Dix and clinic nurse, Glynis Wrathall at Sick Kid's for taking care of Lindsay so well," his mom said. "Plus, he really likes the playrooms there." "He was disappointed," added O'Connor. "It's hard for him since his whole family seems to take off when Lindsay's in treatment. After she had her surgery, Nicholas did n't want to see her in the hospital - he couldn't take it. In his own words, 'cancer is like a big, black spider'." What keeps everyone's hopes up through this arduous journey is Lindsay herself. "She laughs at the drop of a hat and she's very, very vain," said her grandmother. "She wants to brush her hair, but she doesn't have any at the moment. She loves having her picture taken. We call her princess. She is a fantastic, little girl. Even though she's my granddaughter, she is the most adorable, little thing." O'Connor also credited Lindsay's progress to the power of prayer and positive thinking. "The amount of people praying for her recovery and thinking about her is incredible."
