Sunday, June 13, 1999 Oakville Beaver Weekend 25 Krishnamurthy joins legends' Oakville's Kavitha Krishnamurthy is chipping in for her Mississauga club's Legends Tennis Fest. It will be held at the Ontario Racquet Club (ORC) on Tuesday (June 15) in conjunction with a $10,000 (U.S.) International Tennis Federation (ITF) Futures tournament which runs at the club from June 12-20. Krishnamurthy is one of the club's prominent members. She won the Canadian U -18 outdoor title last year and has also won national singles titles in the U-16 and U-14 divisions, as well. She's Canada's highest ranked female junior tennis player, 55th on the ITF world junior rankings. The Oakville teenager will join some prominent tennis legends -- former American tennis star Dick Stockton along with retired Canadian champions Rene Simpson and Andrew Sznajder. The activities begin at 1:30 p.m. with a 90 minute ten­ nis clinic and round robin for adults. A clinic for junior players will be held from 4-5 p.m. followed by a doubles exhibition between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. featuring the four tennis guests. Comedian Jeff Lumby will be in the umpire's chair. There will also be prize giveaways, a bar­ becue and silent auction. All of this is free to the public. All proceeds from the ORC Legends Tennis Fest will go to the Canadian Safe School Network, a not-for-profit charity focused on preventing violence in schools. "We're very pleased to be able to help community groups like the Canadian Safe School Network," said ORC manager Jeff McCarrol."Tennis is a great vehicle for get­ ting kids involved in physical fitness and keep them busy." Tourney champs in Niagara The U-14 Oakville Angels got back on track, winning the West Niagara Invitational Championship over the June 5/6 weekend. The final found the Angels facing the Burlington Rage in a game o f chances, mistakes and close calls. Edwina Haddon clinched the game in overtime. The Angels dom inated their tourney opponents, outshooting them 66-8, but more importantly were happy to see their scoring touch return, compiling an 18-1 advantage. • T he A ngels w on their sem ifinal gam e 4-0 over North Mississauga. In the preliminary round, the Angels started slowly with a 1 -0 win over Niagara Falls then got into gear with a 3-1 win over Erin Mills, 3-0 over W hitchurch-Stouffyille and 6-0 over Sarnia. Goals scored by Kara Lang (5), Edwina Haddon (5), Lauren G lover (2), Samantha Johnson (2), Katie Zanella (2), Carly Anderson and Ann Friedland. Entrants must be unranked players under 14, resi­ dents of Oakville or members of an Oakville tennis club. The entry fee is $10 which includes a barbecue lunch on Saturday, player kits and an opportunity to win prizes as well as trophies.
