I t's The Home Depot's latest do-it- yourself reference guide and it's chockfull of practical advice from the home improvement experts at Home Depot. Just as the name implies, Outdoor Projects 1-2-3 con tains helpful information for homeowners who are plan ning to tackle outdoor pro jects, ranging from building and repairing decks to con structing retaining walls, from installing fences to replacing concrete blocks, and from building outdoor furniture to adding faucets and garden fountains. Regardless of the size and complexity of the task at hand, Outdoor Projects 1-2-3 includes step-by-step instruc tions and colourful illustra tions to guide both novice and experience homeowners through projects from start to finish. Special features through out the book call out notewor thy bits of information that will help homeowners save time and money, prevent cost ly mistakes, and avoid acci dents and injuries. Some of these features include: • Skill Scale. Gives the skill level needed for specific projects. • Trip Saver. Includes tips on how to save hours of time going to and from the store. • Safety Alert. Alerts read ers to potentially dangerous situations. • Oops! Includes common mistakes homeowners make and solutions to fix them. • D esigner's Corner. Focuses on matters to consid er when making design and style choices. "The impetus behind Outdoor Projects 1-2-3 is to provide homeowners with accurate and useful informa tion, so they can successfully complete great projects," said Ben Allen, executive editor and spokesperson for Outdoor Projects 1-2-3. "The Home Depot experts understand that in addition to tools and supplies, homeown ers need information to guide them through their projects. This book contains that infor mation." Outdoor Projects 1-2-3 was modeled after Home Depot's first book entitled Home Improvement 1-2-3, which focused exclusively on indoor projects and has sold more than half-a-million copies in the past two years. Both books combine the home improvement expertise of the editors at Better Homes and Gardens® Books and the project know-how of The Home Depot employees. "What makes these home improvement books different from others is the unique way in which information is gath ered and presented," said Allen. "Because it is The Home Depot experts who interact with the do-it-your- selfers, it was essential that we solicited employees for their feed back to find out exactly what information homeowners need and want. Each project featured in the book was then reviewed by Home Depot employees to ensure accuracy." Outdoor Projects 1-2-3 is a 480-page hardcover book that retails for $29.98. It is available this spring at all Home Depot stores and wher ever fine books are sold. Better Homes and Gardens Books/Meredith Books is a division of Meredith Corporation. Plants ju s t love a drip Our summers are dry and hot. Is there an alternative to installing a conventional sprinkler? Drip irrigation is a good alternative to a sprinkler system if you live in a place where water is at a premium. Because the watering can be controlled quite precisely, you don't end up with water where you don't need it. A drip-irrigation system consists of a web of hoses that runs through a garden at ground level, according to the experts at The Home Depot. Connected to an outdoor faucet, it provides plants with a steady drip of water through a series of small nozzles, or emitters, that are inserted in the lines. The spacing of the emitters depends on the type of soil. For plants more than one foot away from a hose, you should use a feeder line. The hoses are joined by Ts and elbows to a main hose attached to an outdoor faucet. A backflow preventer keeps water from backing up into the house. The system can be quite large, because the water flow is small. Soaker hoses are also a good alternative, although they don't offer the same control and precision as a drip-irrigation system. They are significantly less expensive and are easier to install. A soaker hose is basically a garden hose with porous walls or holes punched into it. Attach a backflow preventer and then screw the soaker hose onto an outdoor faucet. Lay the hose in the garden where water is needed and then turn on the water.
