"I have a group of loyal, diverse and dedicated sponsors, including business associates, friends and family. His pledges range from $25 to $1,000. Most of them are $100. 'T he Heart and Stroke Foundation is a very easy sell for me, because the cause is so good. People are very gen erous." Heart disease and stroke are Canada's leading causes of death and cost the Canadian economy over $17 billion in health care costs, lost wages and benefit payments, says the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Cardiovascular diseases causes 40% of all deaths in this country. Participation in the Becel Ride for Heart is open to all cyclists and inline skaters, and registrations can be accepted up to the day of the event. Pre-registrations will be taken locally at Cyclepath at 500 Speers Rd., up until this Friday, May 28th. Afterwards, registrations can be taken from June 3rd to 5th at one of four check-in centres in the Greater Toronto Area. For centre locations and other information about the ride, call 416-486-RIDE or check the Heart and Stroke Foundation's website at: www.hsf.on.ca Same day registrations will be taken starting at 7 a.m. for cyclists and 9 a.m. for inline skaters. Participant will receive free refresh ments, first aid and cycle repairs, plus the entertainment will be free. Wednesday, May 26,1999 Photo by Wilma Blokhuis Bob Brooks of Oakville, volunteer chairman of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, will participate in his sixth annual Becel Ride for Heart on June 6th. Last year he raised $14,200. Voice of Raptors speaks at Oakridge Herbie Kuhn, the Voice of the Toronto Raptors, speaks at Oakridge Bible Chapel on Sunday, May 30th. He will be the keynote speaker at a barbecue at the church at 2250 Eighth Line north of Upper Middle Road, starting at 4 p.m. Entertainment will be pro vided by The Masters Four quartet. The barbecue will at the church grounds follow ing the formal presentation. The event is free, and open to the public. Kuhn, 30, was bom, raised, and continues to reside in the Beaches area of Toronto. His ascension through basketball's announcing ranks is remarkable. In 1992, Kuhn was announcing Double A men's and women's games at Vanier College in front of crowd numbers that could be count ed on your fingers. He grad uated in 1994. Two years later, he was announcing for the 1994 World Basketball Championship in Toronto and Hamilton. By the fall of 1995, he had become the in- house Voice of the Toronto Raptors. A veteran of 160-plus NBA games and over 20 international contests, Kuhn has also announced count less basketball, volleyball, football, and hockey games for Rexdale's Humber College and Toronto's York and Ryerson Universities. He is married and is a devout Christian.
