A clear coat is essentially a transparent layer of paint that protects the color coat from fading, chips and scratches. And, if a panel needs repair, the new and old color layers can be blended and new coat of clear applied to the entire panel to give it uniform gloss. By Jeff Melnychuk SPECIAL TO TH E BEAVER Chevrolet's new Silverado might not look much different than the outgoing model, but you don't have to look far beneath the skin to find solid gold. No longer called C/K pickups, the entire line of Chevrolet trucks has been rebadged as Silverados and include four-wheel disc brakes, ABS and 16-inch wheels as standard equipment. Aside from feeling car-like in ride, tighter, sturdier and quieter, the three new V8s make more power per cubic inch, have lower emis sions and rekindle some old memories, especial ly the 'new' 327. Officially called the Vortec 5300, the engine cranks out 270 horsepower. The smallest of the new V8s is a Vortec 4800 (294 cubic inches and 255 horsepower) while the largest is a Vortec 6000 (364 cubic inches and 300 horsepower). A five-speed manual transmis sion is standard across the line, with a four-speed automatic transmission just an option check box away. O f course, you can still order the 4300 V6 (200 horsepower) and the 6.5-litre turbodiesel with 215 horsepower, up 20 from last year. Even at 300 horsepower, the Vortec 6000 requires only regular unleaded fuel. Perhaps not prepared to mess with the success of the outgoing truck, the new Silverado's flanks are rounder and smoother with square wheel lips and new grille as the obvious changes. For the finer points, you really need the old and new together to see the difference. The difference, both structurally and mechan ically, is more than skin deep. In the case of 4x4 models, a new AutoTrac four-wheel-drive sys tem automatically senses rear-axle slip and trans fers power to the front wheels. Aside from a noticeably roomier interior, get ting in and out of the big beast is easier thanks to a lower step height and new standard third door on the passenger side of all extended cab models. Silverado comes in three variations: base; LS and LT trim. The base comes with the essentials, but air conditioning and most power and conve nience items are optional. Ordering the LS or LT models will get you most of these items and some other features that can't be found on the base, such as electric outside mirrors, chrome- trimmed grille and the optional availability of the AutoTrac system. On the road, the new truck feels as though you're seated in the eye sockets of a beast that only you can tame.. It responds to your every command -- steering, braking and throttle -- while barely lifting a finger. The engine is as much responsible for this as the improvements to the handling, the stronger frame and the wider track. If you never thought you'd be interested in owning a truck, you should really take one for a test drive. The new generation Ford F-Series and now the Chevy Silverado offer real-world options to the dilemmas o f space, ride, power, flexibility and the no-muss-no-fuss 4x4 models make gaining extra traction a painless task for the driver -- there are no hubs to lock and no handles to pull. Obviously they cost more than a small car to operate, but are in the same ball park as some sport-utility vehicles -- GM 's own Yukon and Suburban obviously come to mind -- and should be considered viable alternatives. After all, wouldn't you like to tame a beast? Oakville Beaver Sports • N ews • Entertainment Winner of President's Award m $1,250 DOWN NO SEC. DEPOSIT. FRT & PDS INCL. /MONTH/48 MOS.
