THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A3Wednesdsay MAY 26, 1999 basis of economic growthTax cuts form By Gary Carr PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATE For years, under the Liberals/NDF^ Ontario fam ilies were getting poorer because of ever increasing taxes. Those same high .taxes were driving jobs and investment out o f Ontario. The debate is over. Tax cuts create jobs. The government has cut taxes 69 times. These cuts helped create 540,000 net new jobs since 1995. This is the biggest job increase in Canadian history. We all know the Liberals are in favour of higher taxes. Dalton McGuinty has actually bragged again As an elected official for the past 14 years, I have developed a very strong understanding of the proper ty tax issue. I have listened carefully to what taxpay ers have to say. First and foremost, they want bal anced budgets. A Liberal government will balance the provincial budget, something the Mike Harris gov ernment has been unable to do since taking office. No other issue typifies the disappointment with the Harris government more than the issue of taxation. Some people have actually been lulled into thinking and again, about being opposed to tax cuts. In fact, Dalton McGuinty and the Liberals are planning to allow school boards to raise property taxes by 10%. Our "Blueprint" plan will cut income tax rates a further 20% and cut the provincial share of proper ty taxes by 20%. These ta^ cuts will help create 825,999 jobs over five years. The tax cuts have pro duced dramatic results. The 540,000 new jobs are more than the combined population of London, Kingston, and Sudbury, or more new jobs than there are people in Mississauga. When a government cuts taxes, it allows people to keep more of their money. That's a simple, clear incentive for hard work, expansion, and growth. they are paying less to government these days when, in fact, most people are paying more in property taxes, user fees, prescription costs or tuition hikes. Since taking power in 1995, this government has added at least $24-billion to the provincial debt. It is beyond belief that the Mike Harris government has managed to increase debt, raise property taxes, and cut important services in healthcare and education. After campaigning against Market Value Assessment during the last election, the Mike Harris government broke its promise by introducing a mar- 'ket-based system. Given our geographic proximity to (See Tories' page 5) With more people working, government revenues have gone up, even as tax rates were going down. We cut taxes because we know it leads directly to more jobs and a stronger economy. The government is also cutting the small busi ness corporations tax rate in half, to 4.75%. Ontario's small businesses will have the lowest cor porate tax rate in Canada. Small businesses are our biggest job creators, accounting for an estimated 80% of the new jobs in today's economy. Giving them a tax break will make them more competitive and directly boost job creation. We Will also pass a Taxpayer Protection Act that will require governm ents to get the explicit approval of taxpayers in a province-wide vote, before they can introduce any new taxes. Unlike our "Blueprint," the Liberal/NDP elec tion documents barely mention jobs and economic growth. Jobs and growth don't magically appear out of thin air. They require a strong plan designed to build economic growth and stimulate job cre ation. If you would like a copy of "Blueprint," please call me at 827-4153.1 want you to read the plan. I want you to compare it to the other parties. I know you will agree that it is a balanced plan to ensure continued prosperity and growth. Our "Blueprint" will maintain our momentum, boost confidence, and build a brighter future for every Ontario family. Liberals promise balanced budget Kevin Flynn LIBERAL PARTY CANDIDATE In the weeks leading up to the June 3rd provincial election, the Oakville Beaver will be running viewpoints by the Oakville riding candidates on current issues...today they respond to... T A X E S Wealthy benefit from tax cuts-NDP ENNISCLARE ^INTERIORS ̂ By Sean Cain NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY CANDIDATE It should be quite clear to anyone, at this point, that the Harris tax cut has caused the massive reduction in funding to our schools, hospitals, environment and community services over the last four years. When governments cut taxes, they must make up the difference by cutting social programs, which Gary Carr and the Conservatives have. Although they say it created jobs, they do not mention the fact that Ontario's economy has been led by an export boom as a result of the strong American economy, our 680 dollar, and interest rates which are at a 30-year low. A multitude of studies also show that it was only the wealthiest people in Ontario who benefitted. An OFL (Ontario Federation of Labour) report last year called The Growing Gap illustrated that even with the Tories' so-called "Fair Share Health Levy" taken into effect, the poorest 10% of working families received about $150 a year from the tax cut, yet the top half of the richest 1% of families took home over $15,000 a year. In fact, over half of the tax cut dollars go to the wealthiest 20% of Ontario families. The theory that this is a "fair" and "across the board" tax cut is a complete (See 'NDP' page 5) S t o r e w i d e S a l e OAKVILLE 1075 North Service Road West, Oakville (905) 825-2450 Call 825-TIPS or 1-800-668-5151 W h e e ls sto le n , c a rs left A car dealer in Oakville was the victim of a thief interested in tires earlier this month. Crime Stoppers wants to know who was involved. During the Friday night of May 14th-15th, someone entered a fenced com pound at Kerr Cadillac on the South Service Road near Dorval Drive. The culprit jacked up several vehicles, and removed their wheels. All of the wheels stolen had 16-inch B.F. Goodrich tires mounted on them. These wheels are for sports utility vehicles and pick up trucks. Some damage was caused to the vehicles as well. This was the second such occurrence at this dealership within two weeks. In fact, some of the same trucks were involved in both cases. The esti mated value of the stolen wheels and damage was placed near $20,000. u have any information that leads to an arrest in this or any other case, you may be eligible for a cash reward.
